Everyone
I was asked to call a parent on facebook yesterday. Today I returned the call. I was amazed with what I heard. I little background to understand why this was such big news. Last year, this family went to mediation, and came out with a finding that their little girl would go to the kindergarten/1st grade they had chosen, with them not being reimbursed for transportation. The school wanted to transport to a school about 1 hour or longer away. She has medical issues that made this a bad choice for the family. All her doctor's were 1 hour or longer away from that area. So the parents choice to accept this, and 3 weeks later withdrew her because they couldn't afford to transport. I had been working on finding out if they could file a complaint through me. Well, this school district is changing special education co-ops next year. And the school contacted the parents before school started this year requesting a meeting. They worked out that she would be able to go to the school of parents choice. And the school district would pay for transportation. The parents and school did this without my help. Mom has asked questions as the years have gone by, she has learned what to ask the school, and their coordinator. And she learned to trust her. I believe this is the start to a beautiful relationship for this family. My work may be over the phone now. Or even over mostly. Just as we as PSV's like. Hope everyone can get just one of these stories this year. It sure lifted my day, and year. Donna |

You guys are always the first to lift my spirits. I wanted to share my
good news. This is one of the hardest and most heartwrenching situations I've dealt with. I wasn't sure how long this little lady was going to have to wait for her education. I have someone else other than my co-workers I get to share this with. Its my PSV that is having so many health issues. I'm thinking it will help lift her spirits. donna |

Great news Donna!
It sounds like you've educated the parents on how to work with the school and that they are coordinating on their own. I'm glad that it is working out and the transportation will be covered. |

A miracle worker! You give your knowledge to those that need h tools. No way could school district refuse transportation when they have the hat is it, 506 under IME..not here in PA. I thought it was national, but you would know.
Hugs and thanks for being an advocate for the kiddos and family.

Yep DiMarie
That is supposed to be the law. But this particular set of parents wouldn't let me help them fight the system through the state. So my hands were tied. It was only their little girl that was getting hurt. When I was in a meeting this fall I had heard this particuar system, was moving coops. Next year. And that made me know that she would be able to get services next year. So I was happy, but the call was icing on the cake the school had stepped up and worked through this year. I think it was up higher than the principal that refused to pay last year. Donna |

Dear Donna,
Quote:
just a note on handling... when holding an adult cat, one should always support the hind quarters. Ideally, the hand facing the cat goes under both forearms; the other hand "wraps up" the hind quarters, paws included, so the cat is in a "sitting" posture and its entire weight is supported by that hand. This is not for comfort, although the cat will be more comfortable, nor to avoid the cat "escaping" or slipping, although those are much is less likely too. This is to avoid potential injury to the cat. it is particularly important with heavy cats, but should be done with all adult-sized cats (6 months and older). Christina here, although tolerant of the handling, shows mild displeasure - her ears are slightly back. The fact that her paws are outstretched in clawing/grasping posture shows she does not feel stable (like she is falling) - she is reading to grab on at first sign of slippage. anyway congratulations on your new family member! ~ waves ~ p.s. Derrick is looking mighty fine! |

Thanks for posting the picture better for me Waves.
I couldn't get it to come up better. Not sure if this was just how Christina would allow him to hold her at this point on that day. He had a little trouble getting her out of her cage. She is a little harder to handle and get out of cages than some. Donna |

Christina is still adjusting, but the day will come. she just needs time.
I have had 3 or 4 rewarding cases this last week or two. And today I finished the training for one more Parent Support Volunteer. Who will be good. I'm really pleased right now. donna |
