Hi,

Is it one of the new ones? Crazy Meds says it is related to Effexor but with less side effects.. Have you taken Effexor?

http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Meds/Pristiq

Quote:
3.  Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) Pros and Cons
3.1  Pros
Because it’s works on more than one neurotransmitter, Pristiq is far less likely to poop-out than an SSRI.
Far fewer drug-drug interactions than Effexor, so if Effexor works for you, but is now a problem because of some other medication(s) you need to take for some other condition(s), Pristiq might be an option.
Weight gain is less likely than SSRIs or Effexor.
Sexual side effects are lower than SSRIs for women.

3.2  Cons
Just because some of the side effects aren’t as bad for some people doesn’t mean it’s a completely different drug than Effexor
Especially when it comes to the discontinuation syndrome. That may or may not suck less, but the potential of it happening is no different.
Weight gain is probably less likely for the same reason as Viibryd.
Sexual side effects are more likely for men than some SSRIs (say Prozac and Luvox).
Pistiq has one drug-drug interaction Effexor doesn’t: nicotine.

I like this Pristiq so far....The psychiatrist gave me meds when I was at a point of but I am now challenged with the next mountain to climb which is getting my 13yr old child better....We both needed help and my child will go to psychiatrist in a few weeks. I have finally got myself in door for rehabilitation for the TBI/PCS and now I am fighting to get my child to go to school....we had a deep talk yesterday and I was told "dead is better then suffering" by my 13yr old.....I'm lost for words....the pain and suffering has played a major part on my child.

Hi,

I hope the Valium helps you. It is a good med.

It is great that you and your child are talking. I really hated every minute of school at that age and I was not even depressed. I think that schools can be alienating for some children.

The psychiatrist will come up with a diagnosis which will give you leverage when you need to get the school to make accommodations.
In the meantime, does your 13 year old get enough sleep? Some exercise?

It sounds like you might need to get you both to the hospital.

Also if you can't get her immediate help. I have a suggestion for the
school issue.

If she has a primary doctor have them write a script that says she can't
attend school right now for emotional reasons, and needs to be
homebounded. And that they are monitoring her care.

And that in a couple of weeks she will be seeing a psychiatrist.

They do not have to go into more of a reason than this. The school only
has to have a note from a doctor that states this. When she is on
homebound, they will give you homework, and should give someone for
3 or 4 hours a week that will tutor and monitor her work.
This can either be at a library, or say the school.

It would be after hours.

You have a say were.

Hi, MiaVita,

Taking her to the hospital is a good idea.
She could use a talk therapist too. The therapist can encourage her to try new things beyond the computer.
Also, at the hospital she might get hooked up with a social worker. Maybe you can ask to talk to her social worker. The social workers are good about information about about services available in the community. They might even help with school too.
