Steve,

It sounds like you've narrowed it down to one particular fan... that's good!

Did you remove the fan from the machine when you cleaned it? Vacuuming/cleaning from outside may not work. The dirt really clings.

------------------------

What is your reasoning about using oil around the fan area?

I have some concerns with that:

1. Getting oil on machine components will leave them vulnerable to dirt which will accumulate and make black goo.

2. If the fan itself is making the noise, oil around it will not help unless you get it right into the fan spindle and nowhere else and that is an iffy proposition. The best thing to do then is probably to replace the fan (cheap, easy).

3. The sound can also be d/t vibrations between the fan and machine casing, if any screws have come loose. In that case, oil would not help anywhere. Replace the screws or try using little plastic seals with the screws.

Good luck!

Steve,
IT at work had me turn off my computer and use one of the air cans on it. Let it dry 24 hrs. I have Verizon phone and for $5.99 a month there was coverage for all my computers. It cost $75 copay, I didn't know about, but they sent me a box to ship the laptop t them for repair, or replacement. I had five years on the warranty, but forgot to send it for repair when I called them....they would take care of it after not receiving before the exp date.ugh I was made at myself.

The thing kept overheating.....but, I have the box and sending it to the ompany the warranty is with for Verizon. See how it goes.
I hope it starts working okay.
Hugs
Di

Your right about not getting oil on electronic machine components, because it would cause an accumulation of dust, carbon, and everything else that's attracted to electronic engines. You can feel the static next to a machine like this sometimes. That draws dust, and carbon.

I have ionic breezes for my allergies. I clean the grids, and put them back in. If I got oil on one of those grids,or filaments,it would destroy the machine probably. They have two filaments going down the ionic breezes that attract dust. I only use water to clean the grids, and dry them, and let the rest of the moisture evaporate before I put the grids back in.

I could not get into the fan spindle. I've done something right by tinkering around with it. I don't want to pat myself on the back yet,but it's doing better.

The computer is about 11 years old,and something broke when I was attempting to get inside it. I vacuumed that area, and tried to put it back together, but a small plastic holder clip broke off. Now I have duct tapeholding one side of the computer to the front. The back of it is loaded with rivets, and not screws. I'm the third person who has owned this computer, and have had it for several years. BF

That's great, Steve. I am glad you were able to improve the situation!

So now you and I are both using duct taped 'puters! Ha!

Oh geez, that machine has been through a bit! A previous owner replaced the original screws with rivets? Yikes!

I don't know who put the rivets in the back of the computer. I wish that they didn't. Oh well. The computer has had a long life, but I cannot afford a computer right now. I hope that it keeps working for a while. BF

Good luck Steve

I think it sounds like your doing great.

I wish we could do that well too at my house.
