I haven't had any blue screen of death for ages..years even..LOL

I still use windows XP - until it expires anyway (this June is what they are saying.), plus I try various Linux distros as they come out as a dual boot system..
I'll go 100% Linux when my XP expires.

Linux distros got put on all our laptops as soon as the warranties expired..

My latest laptop is a refurbished Dell that came with Vista, the guy said I could install Linux right away if I wanted to and it wouldn't void his warranty - small local business so he could make his own rules ...

I went with a friend today to the Apple Store, he to get Macbook fixed; me to just admire the hardware.

My "first-love" will always be Linux, but Apple does offer a nice hardware+software product.

Default Hi BF

Hi BF, check out WalMart, they have re-built towers for very reasonable costs. I took the information on a tower to three stores Like Office Max. All of them said to go back to Walmart and get that tower. Could not match it in price for the quality I got. I bought an HP, that is up to date, and will last me a long long time. They also have some of the information about this program on line. xxxginnie

I'd be rather surprised to find that has changed. I haven't done pro mac development myself, but reason is job availability. I think, because Apple is ridiculously expensive, they have a smaller customer base, which in turn makes for a much smaller developer base. I couldn't afford to buy a Mac to tinker with, but even if could, it would be pointless, because jobs writing software for Mac are non-existent in my area.

I only use Apple because I started on a machine in the early 1990s
(Macintosh Classic II ?) and kept using Apple products at home.
The Mac II's were out then, yes. they were in color. The classic Mac, Mac Plus and Mac SE were the small, cubic, all-in-one units. I think these were black and white only and color came out on the II. I owned a Mac Plus for a while. Long before I owned a PC. I also used to tend the labs in University, helping students get on with whatever computer they had to use PC/Mac/mainframe... so my "user" familiarity runs through the Mac II, but not beyond.

Actually, I do very little computer work at work.
I do the work on my home computer and send it to work via email, and such.
That works!

Emm, for a brief time I used to delight in titling Microsoft products "Microshaft".

Are they really??? That is sad to hear. Maybe when I get done trying to build myself into a self-sustaining human being, I'll look into this. I think I have to see it to believe it. I always saw the Mac line as a cut above, from the technical standpoint... but I am so out of touch, now.

That's impressive!

Aside from Vista, which I was able to avoid completely, I've seen BSODs on every Windows version starting from pre-release NT builds all the way up to 7. My most stable systems have probably been NT 3.51 (hated 4.0), Win 2000, and XP, but they all bluescreened at one point or other. My mom's 7 is doing it much too often for my liking... she may have a flaky power situation, I'm afraid.

Cool!

My current laptop came with Vista preinstalled and an XP recovery option. I immediately "recovered" XP thereby ridding myself permaently of Vista.

Which Linux distro do you use? Any reason for the preference? I plan on putting Ubuntu on this laptop, but want to get myself moving forward in the Windows department first.

Sometimes it can be tricky to find a distro that is easy to set up the wifi connection, Ubuntu seem to be the easiest to set up on most systems, usually finds it automatically.

I like the styles with the task bar at the bottom, similar to XP look...
Lately I have been installing Ubuntu and use synaptic to get the KDE desktop environment and install it. Then at the log on screen click the icon to change to the KDE or other style.

But some other nice ones are KDE, Zorin OS, Mepis, Mint is becoming a #1 favorite on most lists(so many versions to choose from w/mint), LXDE, PCLinuxOS, Lubuntu, Peppermint, SnowLinux...
List of most distros and new ones coming out -
http://distrowatch.com/index.php?dataspan=52

Once in awhile, I find the web-pages aren't as smoothly displayed as with windows..
but a different distro won't have that problem..it seems to be a distro/system /configuration compatibility thing..

Thanks for the feedback Jo,

Sounds like it is mostly preference and perhaps some compatibility. Good to know that Ubuntu has high compatibility as I've got a DVD with that (don't need to download ).

Interesting about the web pages not loading smoothly. That won't matter much for my purposes, but it's quite curious that it's distro- (and not browser-) related. Perhaps something flaky to the default network configuration. I guess I will look into that when the time comes.

Frown ranting abt MS WORD

The computer is still a piece of garbage.
I often have to turn it over to someone (anyone) else when I am working with Word.

The one thing that makes the Windows on 8 Dell lap top experience less awful is that months ago I petitioned for a dock, key board and mouse, and a 21 inch (or so) monitor.

I love using the monitor when I am working with someone else by my side.
