Quinoa is also good for groups who cannot tolerate grains /grasses because botanically it is a berry related to beets.

Ethnic communities in this country have become traumatized by diabetes.

American Indian adults in southern Arizona have the world’s highest rates of type 2 diabetes, with one in three currently diagnosed.

I was srsly confused by this quote by me. I think I might have figured out that the quote part got deleted, and this was part of your response?

I am wondering about your observations on ethnic groups disproportionately affected by diabetes... and how this relates to bad nutritional information. Are you saying that some groups are more mis-informed than others? Or that the nutritionists fail to take genetics into account? Or something else I haven't thought of? ;)

There are genetic differences in metabolism between different ethnic populations, but there may not be a primary link. For instance, alcohol over-consumption can trigger metabolic syndromes like diabetes II, and the native American population is more affected by alcohol abuse. Apparently, this is due to both sociological and genetic factors at play.

http://www.ibtimes.com/native-americ...oholism-214046

Quote:

According the Indian Health Services, the rate of alcoholism among Native Americans is six times the U.S. average.
...
one in 10 Native American deaths is alcohol-related [three times the average for the broader population].”
...
“Alcohol was often traded for Native American goods, and possibly used to relax the Native Americans in order to get a better trade,” she stated.
...
“But researchers over the years have shown that the effects of alcohol on this culture are also due to genetics.”

You are right that this is a complicated matter.

Upper Body Weight Training is working for me. Seven times beginning Jun 13

Hi,

Since June 13 I have gone to the gym to do upper body weights
seven times for a 50 minute work out: 3 reps of 10 sets.

After I started feeling comfortable about that, I took tentative "steps" on the upright bicycle. The last three times I rode 25 slow minutes. Legs and knee feel fine.
But I am am not sure about what is going on with my feet.

The last two times I was there I did very very light weights for the knee -- knowing I need to be slow and patient about knee.

======

My goal is to get into a routine of going to the gym (6 miles away and easy to drive) three or four times a week and to do bike or yoga at home in between or whenever I feel like it.

(Both bike and yoga can be the same days as weights but for sure I know that weights need 24 hours of rest.)

Wow, that sounds like a pretty intense fitness plan! :o Sounds like you are doing very well with it, too. :)

bizi 07-03-2015 10:51 AM

Wow!
Mari, I am so proud of you for going to the gym and working out.
It takes determination to start a new habit and stamina to stick with it.
good for you!
It is wise to take good care of your knee. Did they give you some stretching exercises before? I remeber you injured your knee a while ago I just can't remember what was the actual injury that they determined...meniscus?

cannot remember whether I took my meds Saturday night

Forgot to take meds Saturday night -- maybe?

Hubby and I filled out the pilled minder together for Sunday to Saturday so I do not know how I could be confused.

I do not want to take extra but I do not want to skip longer than I probably already have.

He is at the gym right now. Maybe when he comes back he can help.

I hope you got that figured out. I am having a hard time with mine lately. Sucks when meds get messed up.

Mari 07-06-2015 12:45 AM

meds update

I felt real unsettled -- more messed up than depressed but depressed as well.

I talked to sis while hubby was at the gym.
Sis kept saying I was tired -- which made me realize that I HAD indeed taken my meds

I did not take the extra meds and did sleep for five or six hours.

---
Sis and I had a second long talk.

My status right now: taking things easy. Very easy.

M

bizi 07-06-2015 07:54 AM

I am glad that you talked with your sister.
IT sounds like she helped you.

The ducks showed up while I was trying to get good shots.

HOw are you?

Mari 07-10-2015 06:08 AM

Aug, Sept, and Oct -- biggest months for hurricanes here.

Sleep -- whacky sleeping times and only a few hours here and there

I get confused and about where I am in time and periodically ask hubby what day it is.
Then a few hours later I ask him again.

====

I had him sit down with me to make a hurricane plan / shopping list

1. I showed him the formula for how much water two people need for three days.
(He is willing to to buy only the minimum recommended so I will buy some additional later)

2. We checked our flashlight / battery collection and made a list of on how many new batteries we need of what size/type.
We have a little hand-crank radio but we both hated it when we had to use it in the past. Maybe I will buy a better one.

===

I feel that we accomplished something and feel good that he is on board with his shopping list / our plan.

===
Later I will work on organizing what is already in our house (food, first aid, personal hygiene items) to put things in a convent place in case we are without lights.

M

bizi 07-10-2015 06:52 AM

YOu did well to do this, worked as a team, glad he is on board.

Banking woes:

I am doing extra work to straighten out my ATM card and such (seems like three or four weeks)
because mail and banking is complicated when one is
not up to dealing with stuff AND when the bank has lots of steps involved.
Today's woman on the phone was helpful -- more so than the loser guys in the branch office.

gym

The cleaning is here and hubby went out and bought their favorite rotisserie chicken to eat with salad and coleslaw and whatever else.
I am going to the gym.

They are too high energy for me. Separately they are bad enough.
Together they have the energy of a tornado.

She is good for him so that is o.k. as long as I do not have to deal with that.

M

waves 07-12-2015 03:45 AM

I know what you mean... not about your two peeps in particular, just in general.

Hehe, the gym will require less energy. :D :highfive:

You've got it. The gym was relaxing.
But when I am out of the house, the two of them come up with what feels like crazy schemes -- like an idea in the future about HOW to fix the finish on the front outside door that takes a beating in the sun because it faces West, or some minor repair to a spot in the baseboard due to water damage from the a/c.
The door does need help and I asked her to talk to hubby but I don't like their particular plan and when they do get around to it, I will be annoyed because
1 I will have to keep an eye on them because they might do something that does not make sense to me.
2 They are annoying together
3 Did I say that they are annoying
4

(Hubby is as handy as a jelly fish so one cannot trust him to do basic anything).

I slept some "last night." I woke up feeling refreshed so that counts for something. But I could probably sleep the rest of the day. . . .So, in other words, not really refreshed.

M

bizi 07-13-2015 11:25 PM

Sleep when you can

waves 07-14-2015 12:07 AM

Waking up feeling refreshed is fantastic.

Sucks that it did not last long. You probably got some good quality sleep... just probably need more of it still. ;)

It almost seems like sleep ... good sleep ... easy sleep ... accessible sleep ... a functional sleep pattern ... etc ... it seems like these things are like luxury items in our lives, when instead, they should be staples, readily available, like potatoes and cabbage. Where can we file a complaint?

Mari 07-14-2015 03:22 PM

Hubby's cooking a few nights ago

I bought some potatoes and asked hubby to make the potato and egg dish his mother used to make.
Hubby modified her recipe by adding two cloves of garlic.

(Ingredients: Russet potatoes, eggs, oil, garlic.)

This is what I do

~sleep off and on through out the 24 hours.
~ go to gym every other day -- or at night (Thursday was 9:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
~work -- > I have little projects. Also one big one with a deadline in a week and a half.
~keep myself emotionally steady as much as possible. Some days I have good moments.

Thank goodness for Hubby. He is happy and steady right now.

Had to wait until 9:00 to make phone calls

Hi,:)

1) I called my mdoc's office to get a form to take to the lab for blood work.
They are going to get back to me.

2) I called the car insurance folks.
They had sent me a scary cancellation notice because my bank card is STILL messed up.

3 I called the lab where I got my MRI and X-ray of knee.
Even though we are covered by insurance,
we have a ginormous deductible and
will have to pay a certain amount monthly for a while.

Crawly worms/ paresthesia . . formication is back

Hi,

Around Friday or Saturday I noticed a little bit of a crawly feeling on my neck.
(that is a new place for this).

Right now I have the worms and mostly the frormication on face, arms, near scalp and other place.
It is not intense but it seems to getting more intense,

The only medication that does this is the Lamictal.
I am cutting the Lamictal in half for Sunday and Monday and hoping for the best.

Instead of sleeping, I drove to the beach early and walked two miles, used my camera, and fell asleep the moment I walked into the door.

Hi,

Feeling the stinging at the moment.
Was planning on staying at half dose for a few days . . .or. . not . .. depending on what would be going on when I take the meds in the evening.

=====
Maybe I do not need the lamictal at all -- especially willing to give it up because it is expensive even in the generic that I take.

=====================
Oh and I really do not know what crap I am getting anyway.
The current pharmacy sends me whatever cheap garbage they get.
ALL of the meds are different colors and/or shapes each month.
