Good for you BF! Let him get the hint, people like that you definitely do NOT want around you, I mean if that is a friend what kind of enemy do you end up with....People like that are just awful, miserable and like to spread misery around. GLad you told him you were busy.

All good advice. But I think I'd add that its easy to be the one giving negative thoughts all the time. He might just need to do that.

Its good that you were able to just let it go.

Try telling him that its better to smell the roses than the smoke.
