Hi,
Are we supposed to pick how we define ourselves? How we think others define us?

I get confused when I hear talk about values?

Sorry to be dense.

I guess there is not an easy answer to this....it is all very confusing to
me....and subjective it seems.

Anyone have a simplier definiton of these words:

Values
Morals
ethics

Smile values and goals on Oprah

Bizi,

Have you ever seen that guy on Oprah who does shows about getting rid of clutter?

He asked a woman what her three goals were for the kitchen. She said something like, "Health, Love, Nutrition."

Then he started picking up items and asked her if they fit goals she had stated for the room. He held up an ugly bowl and asked her if it fit the goals. She said no, so he threw it in the garbage box.
They kept doing this. Then at one point she broke down crying because she didn't want him throwing out her kitchen stuff. He reminded her of her goals for the room and she then agreed with him and they got back to work.

When they finished they together created a beautiful kitchen. It had no extra stuff and all the stuff necessary to support her goals.

His "goals" question had provided the blueprint for how the room should look afterwards. Ten years from now, she might have different goals/values for that room.

So that is how I see your value question a little. One could think of the "goals" for that kitchen as "values" for life.

For example, if someone values money, they should not set a goal to study to be a social worker/teacher. That would not fit their values.

If someone values fairness, they might have a set a goal to become a lawyer.

If a person was unclear of their values, they might flounder around trying to achieve various goads that don't fit them. If someone does know their values, then they can set clear goals for themselves and work on achieving them.

The trick is to figure out the values and then match the goals.

. ...taking a guess here

. . . trying to work this out in my head a little. . .

. . . and not sure it works for everyone.

Mari

thank you mari.
I guess I am the floundering type....

I value my family and friends.
I value my integrity, my work ethic.
I value my job
I value my house and car.
I value money but always am in debt.
I value simplicity,
safety,
order,
non'violence,
decisiveness
accountability.

Is value like Love?
like I love my job?

Yes.
What is it about your job that you love?
What do you love about your house and car?
In addition to the rest of the post, maybe the values you are looking for are also in the answers to these questions.
