We have yet to establish causation between trait and state, which makes for some interesting theorizing. For example, can a discordance between trait and state – say an individual with a hyperthymic personality slipping into depression – account for mixed episodes?

This caught my eye last night when I read it too.
So I had to read it again.

When he says population, he does not mean TOTAL population.
He means population of people with manic-depression.

So I guess he is trying to bring some of the uni-polar depressed people into the bipolar party -- he wants them to get better med treatment.
