It would be a very sad day when paper books become extinct.

I love electronics gadgets and "e-readers" and my Kindle For PC.

But nothing can be the absolute replacement for paper books.

I would hope paper books live on for future generations.

Default Hi flutterbye

I guess I like my e-reader, as I can take my library with me if I have to evacuate. My books, well they would be lost in a hurricane. No way would pack those over food and essentials. Hope this good old USA keeps electric going!!!! ginnie

I have a funny story to share. Yesterday I was in the laundromat reading a book on my Kindle Fire. Next to me was this lovely woman (found out later she was 85). I was reading and minding my own business and she's looking at my Kindle. She said "What's that?" I said "it's called a Kindle Fire"

I then said "I'm reading a book". She said 'There's a book in there?" I replied "I have over 100 books on this thing, I even have the bible"

She looked at me incredulously and said "I don't believe it'. I then tapped the BOOKS option and scrolled through all my books. She said "Oh you have the titles of the books?" I said 'No I have the books'. and then I picked one, turned the pages and she was amazed.

I said "Want to be really impressed?" I then tapped the Little Piano app and played the piano.

WELL!!!

Then I showed her the Flashlight app, the app that plays sounds so I can sleep at night. I played the sounds for her. I showed her the alarm clock on it. I showed her the Pandora Radio.

She looked at me and said "What's that called again? I said 'KINDLE FIRE"

She said "How much?" I said "Well now it's about $129.00

She said: AND IT HAS BOOKS, A PIANO, AND IT DOES ALL THAT STUFF?

I said "Ask your son to get you one'. She burst out laughing.

IT WAS A GOOD DAY!!!

I love doing this stuff

Default Hi Melody

Awsome story. Wish I had my mom to show her what came out with these readers. I am sure she would have acted just as amazed.
I have Nook HD, and have learned from the first one now to this. My son is going a step further, and will get an android for me. Since I finally know how to navagate, he wants me to be able to use the TV and not just have the stuff B & N wants you to purchase. They make the side loading difficult. Yep. I am hook line and sinker, and I think it is great you showed someone. My son is an OPT and works in an extended care facility, He uses his android also on his patients for games and utter amazement. He likes their responces to all the apps. too. Makes alot of older people smile!!!!The apps he has helps with cooridnation, and mental agility. finger motions and all that stuff help the eye hand stuff too. Great device, I am ready for a move up. Have fun and do that again melody! ginnie

I thought I would never get over the feeling of having paper from a good book in my hands...

But, I really love my Nook Tablet....It allows me to read and jump online if I need to. I have over 250 books and have yet to pay a penny. NOOK has over a million free books.

I know nothing about Kindle or Sony e-readers. I know my sister has a NOOK but reads her books on her I-Pad....She said she can make the print larger.

I do have a few paperback books here that I want to read...I've started to read them at various times maybe 2 or 3 years ago.

I guess I'm a NOOK 1st then paper book.

I have loads of free ebooks on my Kindle Fire. The only e books I actually paid for were two Star Trek Novels. I ADORE Star trek novels. I bought Yesterday's Son and the sequel "Time for Yesterday". I had purchased them 25 or 30 years ago in paperback form. When I found them on amazon.com and they were eight bucks each, I didn't hestitate. I thoroughly enjoyed them both on my Kindle Fire (when I go and make a wash), that's when I read my e books.

The only drawback is you can't read in the light.

I gather Nook does not have that problem?

Default Hi Abbie

I have the nook HD and am hooked. Love this so much, I am going to get an android. Nook has some drawbacks. B @ N makes it hard to side load things, where the android doesn't. It takes 6 steps to get to a side loaded movie or book if it isn't from B @ N. I will always love the NOOK, but, I want to make it easier for down loads that arn't sponsered from B @ N. I started with the origional Nook, and learned as I went. I traded up to the next model. The origional went to a school for the handicapped. My son is the one who showed me the difference in how tablets work. He is the one who will get me going so I can play movies through the TV free, and music on any device I have, and also from the android itself. I am getting older, so I might as well enjoy the tecky stuff while I am alive to use it!!!! In fact hitting the sack right after this post to go read. Have a good night abbie, keep on reading. ginnie

Oh, my i pod any time. My husband bought me a kindle hd but I don't like it .. It's too big when I wake in the night, which I do, several times, and turn on and stick my head under the duvet so Mike can't see top the light.

Real books .. We have too many, being a family of book a holics ...

Default Hi Saffy

Doesn't your kindle have a light control? You can make the back screen black and the writing white. The dimess can be controled on the nook. Can be a faint light that would not disturb your husband, nor glare in your eyes at night. All my books are put with that back ground black. Can be changed for daylight reading too. See if your owners manual talks about this. I can't imagin the kindle not having such a control. Yes real books are great, but if I ever have to evacuate, I can bring my library with me. Have a good day saffy. ginnie

I know this thread is old but:

I have a Kindle Fire HD and I love it.

The reason I bought it instead of a regular tablet is because it is an eReader and I loved the thought of having all my books with me

However...

I mostly use it (besides for the internet) to buy used paper books straight from amazon

I love books. However having one in my hands and physically turning the pages with my fingers is enlightening. As well, it keeps me focused on one book at a time.
