Has anyone read Kurt Vonnegut's book Galapagos? I read it, and I thought it was great. I read The Sirens of Titan before that, which I also liked.

Hello, I'm new here and wanted to check out the book section, and noticed your post. Kurt Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors. I think I've read all of his books. I loved Galapogas, and Sirens of Titan is one of my favorites. Be sure to read Breakfast of Champions and Slaughterhouse Five--those are definitely his best.

Hi April, welcome to NeuroTalk.
My next Vonnegut reads are going to be Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat's Cradle. I've also got my eye on Deadeye D*ck simply because I love the title. Good reading.

I'm so glad I found a Vonnegut fan! All the books you mentioned are great. I've read them all at least ten times, and they never get old. I cried when he died last year. You either love him or hate him. I love his writing style, and his sick sense of humor, which I definitely share! Anyone who can make something tragic and horrifying to be humorous is alright to me!
I persuaded my little sister to read Cat's Cradle--she's not a big reader, but she fell in love. Now she's read all his books. I was lucky at a garage sale years ago, and I was able to buy most of his books for $10.00. I'm a big book nerd, so let me know if you have any recommendations! I love history and nonfiction; I have trouble finding fiction I like. |

I cried, too. It's so sad when a beloved author dies.
I normally read mysteries and serial killer books (fiction). However, I'm recommending Windblown Clouds by Thomas K. Shor. It's nonfiction, and it's about his travels in Greece and to the Indian Himalayas. He loves mountains and their people, and I think he's a fantastic writer. Makes you feel like you're right there walking beside him. My DH loves history, especially the Civil War. He's a big CW buff, which is one of the reasons why we moved to Virginia--lots of battlegrounds. I like historical fiction. I'm also a fan of things like Mt. Everest, Alaska, Arctic and Antarctic explorations, and anything concerning the oceans. What about you? What are your favorite topics?

Thanks for the book recommendation!
I'm a big history fan. My favorite is English and European history, but I also like the classics, and poetry. I've been writing (or trying to write) a book about WWI for the past couple of years. I also like historical fiction. Lately I've been reading about Roman history. Unfortunately, my reading material tends to pervade my dreams. My husband told me that Thursday night I was talking in my sleep--I was telling my soldiers to "go hunting so we have enough furs for conquering Parthia." I need some lighter books to read! My poor husband is good enough to put up with this, along with our house being overrun by books. I'm very lucky! When I was 14, my great-grandfather died. My grandma gave me his book "Mary, Queen of Scots" that he had been reading, and asked me to finish it for him. That's what started my obsession with British history. I told my dad I'd marry an Englishman someday, and although I didn't really believe it, that's exactly what happened. A coworker lent me a book called "Rhett Butler's People" and I've been reading it all day today. It's basically Gone With the WInd from his point of view. My favorite book though has to be "To Kill a Mockingbird." I read it several times a year. Atticus Finch is a hero of mine! |
