I recently had to have a tetnus shot and when the the doctor gave me one with Pertusis vaccine in too.
The ones we had as kids, or that our kids had are not effective. There is a resurgence of the Whooping cough and some people can cough so hard you break a rib. So please update your vaccines....yes we adults! The nurse told me, part of it is the influx of the illegal population that has not been protected and presenting forms of strains we have no immunity too. The children are in the schools with our children, and now we all have to be viligent in checking into protecting ourselves. This shot did not even hurt or swell as the previous tetnus shots bothered me. The one I am not sure about is for my 12 year old daughter for cervical cancer prevention... Also, the one she had for Chicken pox is said is wearing off....Makes me think it would have been better for her to just have been exposed as a child and gotten it over with. Just wanted to share as I was so surprised when the doctors shared this. Dianne

Di,
Do you know if these TDaP (tetanus, diptheria, pertussis), shots are available in no- or low-mercury doses if you request them? The cervical cancer vaccine has had quite a few reactions reported, some quite serious and at least 15 deaths to date from what I have read. The pre-approval safety-testing was carried out on adult women, no pre-teen or teen-age girls were included in the safety testing even though they are the target population for this vaccine. The name of the vaccine is Gardasil, I don't recall the manufacturer, but I am sure you can google it and find more info. beth |

we have some threads around the forums on the pros and cons of the HPV vaccine including this one http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread7215.html vaccinations remain a highly controversial issue and one that each person really has to research thoroughly and come to their own decision on...risks are there for not vaccinating and risks are there with vaccination. ![]()

I appreciate this being mentioned.
I was watching a documentary-type show last evening where a woman had a severe reaction to the shot when it was given to her postpartum. I wish I could remember the specifics, but it took dr's forever to figure out what was going on with her and they explained that it's a complication that can occur in women of childbearing years. I've read a bit (not much and because both daughters are postpartum) and I read both...that's it's recommended then not recommended in childbearing years. It's something certainly to research further before my daughters consider it, but it's something I might have to consider at my age and being around three very young ones all the time? I actually did separate the cartilage in my ribcage from bronchitis once and it was excruciating. ![]() I appreciate the information and am now wondering about my possibly needing, and hubby. KD |

I got it from my niece. We never figured out where she got it from. I was visiting when she was sick and did not have the full diagnosis yet. Because of my lesser immune system I was more prone to get it. No one else in her family got it and they were able to take the prescribed antibiotics to prevent the infection. I took the preventative but I still ended up with a case of it. Trust me when I say you don't want to get it. I stayed home from work the prescribed time for being contagious and no one at work got it. But it took me several weeks to shake it totally.

Especially with the oldest child being in preschool, it would probably be a good idea for me and hubby?
Thank you for sharing that because I'd really not thought about the need until this post and now I'm seeing it might be more a need than I first considered. I'm glad you're doing well now. ![]() KD |
