Default HP officejet 6500

as I said in anther post, I got a new computer, with windows 7. I am trying to install the software for the new printer. its an office jet 6500 by HP, and it wont install because it said "windows7 was an exepected OS" it wants XP or Vista and refuses to go further. Do I need a patch? am I out of luck till HP catches up. The front of the machine said "windows 7 ready!" sure, if I use the USB and plug it in, I can use it as a printer, but I want to be able to use the great software that is supposed to be part of the package.

I hate new computers. wow are they fun once they are set up, but getting them there...give me a break. I have had my oldie for a looooong time, and we finally broke down and got a new system. its gonna take days to catch up, and the new OS is tricking all my old stuff.
