Default what is going on with my modem.

I have Verizon DSL.

When I got my computer back from the repair guy, this started to happen. Doesn't happen every day, but today (and we are indeed in the middle of a mini-hurricane so I don't know if this is what causing my modem woes), but I'll try and explain what is happening.

I have a Westell 6100 modem. For a few years now. No problems at all.

Well, for WHATEVER REASON, the fourth light (the internet light), goes blank, and then red)

I know what to do. I open up internet explore (which of course can't connect because the internet light is off), it runs a diagnostic, it tells me "shut off your modem for 3 minutes), which I do"

And then all is well. I am then able to go right back on Firefox.

So my question is.

Why exactly would the 4th light (the internet light) go off?

It syncs up just fine when I re-boot the modem.

But who wants to keep re-booting the modem.

I did call Verizon when this first happened (about 1 month ago). She ran a line test, told me all was well, told me to re-boot my modem and it worked fine.

But now it's doing it's thing again.

What exactly does that 4th light (internet) exactly mean.

I get green for POWER,green for ETHERNET, green for DSL, and usually green for INTERNET.

But occasionally the INTERNET THING goes blank and then red.

Do you think because we are in the middle of a mini hurricane, the weather can affect this?

Thanks much to anyone who can explain this to me.

Melody

Default Short in line

I had the same thing with AT&T DSL. It means the DSL isn't syncing. And, it did seem to occur more often during wet weather. The line techs all told me that wet weather affects DSL.

But, I first got DSL in 2000, and never had issues until about a year ago. I quit rebooting the DSL (shutting down for 3 minutes), and started calling the tech department while it as still down, so they could test the lines. The funny thing was that by the time I punched my way through their menu prompts, the red light had turned back to green, so when they tested, the line appeared ok. I finally started keeping a log of every time it went out. And, by that time it was going out 3-4 times each day.

When I had a week's worth, I asked them to send a tech. He looked at my log, knew there hadn't been wet weather for all of the prior 7 days, and actually started tracing the line. He found a short where the line connected to the card in the phone box.

It has worked great ever since and that was about 3 months ago. Long story short, try keeping a log that you can show the line tech when he comes out.

Thanks to both of you.

Right now it's working fine. And we are still having this kind of hurricane outside. I have NEVER heard the wind and rain like I did today. Forget about umbrellas. People are being blown left and right. I can't open up my front door.

I shall keep a log as suggested.

And I do thank you all very much.
