There should be some other settings to try,
look under options, advanced or properties??

I have XP so not sure what settings Vista has.

I've plugged in speakers & headphones and it made a static pop or crackle noise but it didn't blow them.

[In some cases, you can work around the problem by disabling optional speaker effects that are collectively known as enhancements. If disabling speaker effects solves the problem, you might need to update your audio driver.]
