I betcha your player info is in the other partition!
I don't know how to partition drives, or access the other side! I betcha your info is there, someplace! What did he do that for? I'd call him up and ask how to get to the other partition!

Well, guess what I did. After putting in the movie in the CD Rom drive and NOTHING happened, I found one of my husband's old Stock Training DVD's . On this cd it says "place the Cd-rom in your CD-rom drive. Video menu should appear automatically. click any chapter title to view movie.
IT WORKED. I did this in both drives. The C and the E. It worked in both drives. At the top of the screen (as the thing was playing), it said "Quick Start.avi-Camptasia Player (which I then looked up on the internet and it's an avi file player. So what I get from this is that my computer can play avi files but not MOVIE DVD's??????????????????? I still have to download a codecs player. They want $14.99 for some codecs pack. I'm not paying anything because this all worked fine BEFORE i went to the computer guy. I'm going there now and get more info. But what I really don't want to do is unplug this whole computer, carry it into the store, have him do whatever he has to do, lug it home, re-hook it up. I mean, really?? just to play dvd's. I'll buy a dvd player and hook it up to my living room tv. Oh, in my bedroom, I have a regular tv without the red yellow and white inputs. Can I hook up a dvd player to a tv that has a vcr, and cable box, but the front and back of my tv has no red, white and yellow inputs? If I bought a dvd player and brought it into my bedroom, how would I hook it up? Thanks to anyone who knows. You guys know WAY more than I could ever know. BUT I CAN LEARN. lol melody

partitioning the hard drive- if you have a large one it is nice to have it divided up for safety, backups etc.
my 320gig is in 3 sections - 1 for Linux ubuntu {the dual boot part of my system}, 2 is a copy/clone of my XP on the other hard drive for backups and if a major crash, 3 is blank but I can use it for storage or add another Linux prgm if I want to. Usually the partitioning adds drive letters by default - c is main drive unless someone changes that d & e are the cd/dvd drives f,g,h etc are the other partitions if you plug in a usb drive that adds more drive letters also a dvd player should plug in to the vcr or possibly the cable box - most likely the VCR - if not in the front the hookups are in the back.

well I am giving up on getting mine to play DVD movies for now.
I don't know what the problem is. Mel when you click your drive letter whehn there is a dvd in it does it show the files or anything?? mine doesn't even "see" that a disk is in it. I tried 3 movies/dvd none will even show anything file wise when they are in the drives. my drives all function for data/music/burning I checked the properties on them, checked the MWP settings/options so i am stuck on this one.

Jo: I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. My dvd doesn't show up in the my computer thing either. The only time a dvd shows up is when I insert Avatar. Then if I go to my computer....there it is ....on Drive E. If I insert any other dvd, nothing comes up in my computer. Doesn't matter anyway because I CAN'T PLAY ANYTHING. Oh, I went to the computer guy earlier. He listened, said "bring it in, I'll fix it for you". I said "I gave you plenty of money already, and he said "yeah, don't worry, I'll fix it for you". I told him "if you think I'm unplugging everything and lugging that stupid computer here, and then he laughed and said: "oh, I REMEMBER YOU NOW, YOU CAME IN WITH YOUR COMPUTER IN THAT WHEELY THING". I said "that's me" and he said "bring it in". I said 'when I get the chance, but don't hold your breath." I laughed, he laughed, my computer is laughing. And Jo: you said: my 320gig is in 3 sections - 1 for Linux ubuntu {the dual boot part of my system}, 2 is a copy/clone of my XP on the other hard drive for backups and if a major crash, 3 is blank but I can use it for storage or add another Linux prgm if I want to. Usually the partitioning adds drive letters by default - c is main drive unless someone changes that d & e are the cd/dvd drives f,g,h etc are the other partitions if you plug in a usb drive that adds more drive letters also I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT YOU WROTE. lol lol lol lol Partitioning, linux prgm, copy/clone, etc. etc. I STILL USE VCR's. lol Melody

That other part was about Partitions of the hard drive.
basically you can make smaller sections {partitions} on a large hard drive and it makes the system think they are separate drives.

Wow! This is a pretty bad problem LOL!!
Mel you can hook up your DVD player to your tv. Use the yellow, red, and white RCA plugs. Just make sure your using the video and audio out on the DVD, and video, audio in on the tv. Sounds to me that your computer guy partitioned your hard drive which will give you another drive making 2 or more on one hard drive. A lot of times I do this for people also, and what I put on the partitioned drive is an image of the C drive. This way if anything happens to the C drive you can go to the partition and bring your C drive back to what it was on day one. You should ask the computer guy if this is what he did, and have him show you how to use it. Some computer guys dont like to let that info out because you have to bring it in every time something goes wrong, and then he just uses the information stored on the partition to bring back the C drive to the image he installed. Which is what you had when you turned it on the first day after bringing it home. Then they charge for fixing it again. One thing you can do is uninstall media player 11, then install media player 10, then use the link he gave you for the codec which works for media player 10. Just remember you did this so when your windows has updates, make sure you dont just let windows update automatically. First see what the updates are and uncheck the media player 11 update. Usually you will only have to do this one time, but each time you look at what windows wants to update you will see it, but it should remain unchecked. I never let windows update automatically because there is a lot of things you do not really need. The most important things you do want is the defender updates, and any that would update your explorer if you use that. You might try this media player http://majorgeeks.com/Best_Media_Player_d6220.html You can also browse the multimedia selections at that website, but I would definitely go see your computer guy and ask 1. Did he put a image of your C drive, or recovery information on one of those partitions. If he didnt then.. 2. Ask him if he would image the c drive on one of the partitions, and show you how to use it to recover your C drive. 3.Ask him how many partitions you now have, and what are on those partitions if anything.

I forgot to add that having partitions is a good thing. If he made the partition big enough you can save all your photo's, music, or any information you want to keep that could be potentially lost if you lose drive c from virus etc.
The reason is that the c drive is the only drive affected when windows crashes, or a virus, or corrupted file etc. The only thing that would cause you to lose the information on the other partitions is if the hard drive does go out. So even though you have these things saved there it is still a good idea to back up anything you want to save, but it will be safe there as long s the hard drive works.

Okay, let me begin with THANK YOU!!! Lots of info. Didn't understand most of it. BUT....lots of info. lol Now, I clicked on the link you gave me (for the media player). I can't find where I'm supposed to download the media player. There is so much info on that website, exactly WHAT am I supposed to download. So if you could just be a bit more specific, let's say, "melody, go to that site, you'll this this link....blah blah blah, just click on it, and follow download instructions'. that much I CAN follow". And you want to hear something funny? The people around the corner and next door to me, think I'm a computer genius. When their stuff acts up, I get a phone call, I rush over there, (this happened last night). No computer, no electric, no nothing. I simply walked over to the extension cord with the 5 outlets, I reset the button, I turned on the computer AND MOSES PARTED THE RED SEA. You should have seen them whooping and hollering as if I did something INTELLIGENT. I looked at them, laughed and said "don't give me any credit for this, I just re-set your surge thing". They didn't care. Then they said "we got mom the Jitterbug, how do we use this'. I saw the new Red Jitterbug phone, and said 'oh wow, I always wanted to know how this gizmo works", only we don't even know your phone number". So I turn it on, I look at the accompanying paperwork, I look at the box it came in, no phone number. I call the customer care number and the guy says 'Hi this is Mitchell, how may I help you with your Jitterbug today"? and I said 'how do we find what the phone number is?" and Mitchell goes "Open the phone, and I said 'yeah, it's opened". He said "look at the screen", and I said 'yeah, I'm looking at the screen". He said "IT'S THE FIRST NUMBER RIGHT ON TOP, IT WILL ALWAYS BE THERE WHEN SHE OPENS THE PHONE". I burst out laughing and pointed to her phone number (she's 78) and she needed her first cell phone to be easy and A LOUD VOLUME RINGER. So I thank MItchell, hang up, and now we test the ringer. She could NOT hear it. I phone back the guy, and I follow simple instructions and we set the volume on MAX, and BAM, she can hear it. So if anyone is interested in getting a JITTERBUG, THIS I CAN HELP YOU WITH. lol Now, Allentgamer, if you could be so kind and to help me out with what I am downloading from that site, I SHALL BESTOW THOUSANDS OF BLESSINGS UPON YOU. I JUST WANT TO PLAY MY AVATAR DVD. lol Melody P.S. Thanks ever so much Melody, (the new Jitterbug expert)
