I presently have a HP 882C but it has no ink.

The cartridges for the HP are very expensive.

I thought. "why not go on ebay and see how much one of those new Kodak printers are"

Look at this:

Even if I miss this auction there are always others up on Ebay.

This comes with the black and the color cartridges.

It's a good deal right?

And this is compatible with my XP, right? I have USB and parallel ports.

most printers , scanners and thing like that are all cross compatible - but might be good to look on that manufacturers website for specifics.

a quick google for ratings & reviews of any product are good too.

My parents got a Lexmark printer/scanner and I can't say that I like the software interface /settings on it.
They had a Canon before that and I didn't care for it either.

I've had Panasonic, HP & Epson brands - printers, scanners & fax
and those are all pretty straight forward and easy to set up and use.

Haven't use a Kodak printer at all , so not much help on that .

I've read MANY reviews of the Kodak all in one printer. NOT GOOD!!

Many people have said "Do not buy this printer".

I listen to what people said.

I have NEVER had a problem with my HP 882C.

But because my ink cartridges dried out last year, I simply stopped using the printer. Didn't need to print out anything.

But because I need to type some stuff and print it out, I figured, "go and buy a new black ink cartridge". I don't need to buy a color one.

They are BOTH empty by the way.

I just wanted to see if buying a new printer would be more economical then spending $40 on a new black cartridge. I don't want to buy a refurbished one.

Well, after reading about the Kodak printer I said to myself "Go and check and see if your cartridges are actually empty"

So I went to word pad, created a document and hit Print.

My printer started to do it's thing, but nothing happened. Did this MANY times. I made sure there are no jams. In the beginning it would not print anything (nor did I get a message on my screen "CARTRIDGE IS EMPTY", ETC.

It would spit out paper but didn't print anything.

Then I opened the top of the printer, took out each cartridge and placed them back in. Tried to print anything (just to see if a pop up message would say "YOU NEED INK", or something like that.

Tried to print a test page.

NOTHING.

So here's my dilemma (and I have two questions).

1. Does the fact that both cartridges are empty, well is THIS the reason it's not attempting to print anything?

2. Do I have to replace BOTH cartridges, even though I only need to print in black? I don't do photos or anything like that. I just need black ink.

So can I go and buy a black ink cartridge #45 for HP and if I insert a new black cartridge in my HP 882C, will it print if I have an empty color cartridge and a brand new black cartridge.

I would hate to have to spend $80 to buy 2 cartridges just to print in Black and White.

I wish it would tell me 'This is not printing because you have empty ink cartridges".

I don't really know if I need to replace this printer. It used to work fine.

Is there a way to find out what I need to find out?

I buy the Epson generic ink saves some money that way. I've seen generic HP on the shelves.
Some office depot? or office max? stores will refill ink cartridges for cheap if you have any of those around.

I only use the name brand ink if I am doing a special project.

But I do think both cartridges need have some ink or it won't print.

did you try setting it to only print in black & white - no color? jus to test?

and some times my cartridges get dry on the bottom so I have to take then out and clean the opening with a Q tip & alcohol - I just don't use it enough to keep it from getting a clog there i guess.

For plain black & white here's another option - I have a Panasonic {laser} fax/scanner/printer that uses a roll of film instead of ink.
got it at the goodwill store and only had to buy the roll of laser film & download the software for in online.
- no ink to dry out and has lasted for years - it had the manual and was really new looking.

you might go to HP site and see if they have a newer program for the printer or one that will show the ink levels -
Epson has a separate program for showing the ink levels - for the one I have it is separate anyway.

Okay, here's what I just did. I took out both cartridges, I cleaned them. There was black stuff (not a lot), on my alcohol prep thing. I waited until they were dry and put them back in.

I then went to properties and set it to print in black and white.

I tried to print a test page and my printer would not grab the paper.

I checked to see if there was enough paper. There was. I opened the top to see WHY it was not grabbing the paper, but of course because I opened the printer, it was not going to do anything while the cover was opened.

So I have been trying to print ANYTHING, even a document from word pad, but it doesn't grab the paper. The rollers just roll. No paper, so no printing.

I am now thoroughly confused.

This used to be a great printer.

any clues?

or post a pic or link from the net of it
- I had one HP yrs ago that the plastic flipper thing down in the paper area groove flipped over too far - once I flipped it back all was good again.

The same kind got tossed in the disposal bin at work so i asked if i could take it home - since it was replaced already - it had the same problem - so got a nice printer {w/ink still in it}

I they were a DeskJet 712C .

I had an HP printer. It was the all-in0one kind. It always told me when I was running low on either color or black-and-white. You could also go to the desktop and search printer and there you could always check the level of both. It showed a graphic of approximately how much you had left.

When I had problems with my very old computer, I decided to keep the printer / copier. That was a great idea as anybody can make a xerox copy of anything without having to turn the new computer on.

I don't know if this helps but it might give you some ideas...

Staples has printers (HP) on sale for $69. All in one. Why on earth should I buy one ink cartridge for an OLD printer, when I can get a NEW printer (which includes a cartridge) for $69.00

I think I'll do this.
