I have tried to find my answers online, but when I ask the questions, I am directed to websites for people who already know all they need to know about the ITOUCH.
So here's my problem. I want to get a hand held device, so when I leave my house, go elsewhere, I can sit and surf the net. Not a netbook, but something smaller. I have looked at youtube videos on the ITOUCH, but it shows how it's a camera, it shows other things, but these explanations are way too advanced for me. I just want to know if I can go on the internet, (view these forums), view whatever I need to view, etc. I already have a phone, so I don't think this little gadget is a phone. I have a flip, but this thing has a built in camera and video recording thing. That's cool, but that would be a bonus. I just want to be able to go on the internet while, let's say, I am at my local breakfast cafe, I can sit there, whip out the itouch and surf the net. Can I do this with this gadget? In one of the videos it said wifi capability. I know what this is. This means if the place I am in (like Starbucks for example), is wi fi capable, then I gather I can use the ITOUCH in that place, right? How is this done? And what if the place is not Wi Fi capable? Can I insert a pre-paid thing so I can surf the net? And how much is this? Honestly, I don't know where else to go for the answer so if anyone can help me with these few questions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks much Melody

My dd has one and can connect to our home wireless as well as other wireless Hot spots {some are totally free and some need to be logged in and some cost a bit}.
[Browse Anywhere iPod touch is the only iPod with built-in wireless access to the web. Whenever you're connected via Wi-Fi, you can access your favorite websites to read news, check scores, pay bills, and go shopping. And if you're using the new 32 GB or 64 GB iPod touch, you'll notice that web pages load even faster than before.] from amazon page- http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Generati.../dp/B002M3SOBU so on Amazon a 8G 3Generation is going for 199.00 right now & just for comparison.... compare that to a little net book type thing where you get a keyboard & larger screen - http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=...011&sort=price to me the itouch is more for music & kids that can see the little screen well LOL the netbooks or mini laptops might work better for your use. cnet netbook reviews - [Whether you call them Netbooks, mini-laptops, or sub-notebooks, these small, low-cost, low-power systems are the hottest thing to hit laptops since the touchpad. We suggest at a minimum, an Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB or larger hard drive, and Windows 7 Starter Edition, with Bluetooth as a preferred option for tethering a smart phone for mobile broadband access. Higher-end options are becoming more prevalent, with 11.6-inch displays, higher screen resolutions, and new graphics hardware, such as Nvidia's Ion GPU, helping Netbook prices move out of the $299-$399 range. ] http://reviews.cnet.com/best-netbooks/ itouch vs netbook http://www.google.com/#hl=en&expIds=...c48c66f0d3c525 just for more info- here is some wireless router reviews - http://wireless-router-review.toptenreviews.com/ http://www.firewallguide.com/wireless.htm nextag price comparison- http://www.nextag.com/serv/main/buye...er&plw=&phi=50

I went to the Bensonhurst list and all the places that do wi fi near me are McDonalds and Starbucks or libraries. I read on the McDonald's page that you have to access the McDonald's server and follow directions and then you can surf the net. It does not do this with the Starbucks information. So here's my question. Say I get my hands on a mini something or another and I'm IN FRONT of Starbucks or McDonalds and NOT INSIDE the store. Does wi-fi work or do you have to be INSIDE a store? Can't thank you enough. I"m learning new stuff!!! lol Melody

Hubby says that McDonald's info is old. It is free now and you should be able to do it without any fuss.
There are many free wifi's now. Without having one, you can't really walk your route, to check I guess? The wifi signals are not strong...so they drop off very quickly from the location source. I know Panera restaurant With winter coming, you are planning on being out and doing this? I am just asking. I don't use my cell much outside, or computers at all. I prefer to experience the moments tech free in public. If it were me, I'd save up for an iPad. My son has used one and says it is totally rad! Even upNorth, I rarely use the laptop. We recharge it in the laundromat so I can put my pictures on it...and I visit here briefly, because it is my "job" so to speak. But most of the time I do without any internet connection up there. If this is a conflict with Alan over computer times, that would be different IMO. I'd invest in something like Jo suggests, because over the long haul that would be best for your bucks.

Okay, let's talk IPAD.
From what I read when they first came out, they have two kinds?? One is wi fi and the other is a plan that you pay monthly? I'm going to go investigate this. Thanks much. Melody
