Default How do I record an audio file??

Hi all. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to my computer buds out there.

I have found a great way to send greetings through Yahoo Greetings. You can send a greeting that has your own voice coming out of a baby, a chimp, a little bear, it's the cutest thing I ever saw. You can use the voices that they have, a male voice, a female voice, etc. OR, you can upload your own voice.

It says "record your voice, save it as an audio file, then upload it."

Now I know how to upload stuff. I do not know how to record my voice on my computer. I have a flatscreen monitor with a built in microphone. That much I know.

I make videos on my webcam and they always come out, so I must have a built in microphone somewhere in the flat screen monitor, right??

So I gather, I am to press some option either on the desktop or somewhere in my programs, then record my saying, then save it somewhere, right??

I have a HP Media Center so I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO THIS!!

anybody know how I can do this??

Thanks so much.

Melody

Hi sweetie,
{feeling silly today}

try start/ programs/ accessories / entertainment/ sound recorder
and a small window will pop up - looks kind of like a basic tape recorder the way the buttons are set up.
that should work for you.

JO::

You are a genius. I just did exactly what you said to do.

But I didn't save it.

After I recorded it, it gives you the option of saving, or save as.

UPDATE UPDATE.

I just did it. I saved it into my-emusic file. Saved as a sound file, I gather.

So I emailed myself and sent an attachment ( I know how to do this).

Sure enough, I got the e-mail, I clicked on "open the attachment thingee that is in the subject line of the email). It would not open, giving me the message, "bitmap skin". Or something to that effect.

So what am I doing wrong. I did the recording, I saved it into my emusic. But if I want to email it to anyone, they can't open it obviously.

I wonder if I tried to upload it as an audio file, well, if this would work on the yahoo thing. I can't see spending money to join yahoo greetings, if I am not able to upload an audio file. Same thing happened when I tried to upload my video to youtube. Won't work.

Works fine on google. I don't understand this at all.

Any ideas???
Mel

Okay, here's some more information.

I think I may be saving it wrong. When you save it, it goes into emusic as "all files". It isn't saved as an audio file.

However, when I did the attachment I saw that it was a .wav file.

I re-did the email to myself, attaching the file.

It would not open. I tried double clicking on the little blue thing in the subject box, but no matter, I couldn't open it.

So how come I can record it, save it into emusic (maybe I should save it someplace else? ) I did try and save it to my desktop but it still saved as "all files".

Help Help

Okay!!! did that. DIDN'T WORK.

Here's what happens.

I make a recording, I save it to the my documents folder, as a wav file.

I open up my outlook express, and created an email TO MYSELF.

I attach said wav file. Attaches just fine. I sent it along it's merry way.

And there it goes into my IN BOX.

I open up my mail and see there's an attachment (in the subject part of the email, this is how you open up an attachment in outlook express).

So I double click on the little attachment thingee (I've always been able to open up attachments by the way).

But this time, I get a big display saying on my screen: "This program cannot display the web page".. Then I get the message: ""The skin bitmap was not found C: ProgramFiles, Music Match, blah blah blah. ?????

Then I see a little message box that says: "There was a problem with either the Play.dll or mixer.dll".

Now I know that dll means dynamic Link Library (don't ask me how I know this, but I know that this is what dll means).

So what do I have to do to be able to open up an attachment (re: wave file)in my Outlook express?

Maybe if I try to go to my home.verizon account and receive my email there it just might open. But I have no idea why it might open up in Verizon's email and not my Outlook Express.

I can only try and see if this works.

Will let you know.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, here's what I did. I went to verizon (where all my email is FIRST, then it goes over to Outlook). So I went to Verizon, composed an email to myself, did the attachment, mailed it to myself, and in two seconds flat, there it was. I tried to open the attachment, it asked me if I wanted to open it, I said "yes", then I get the same Bitmap thing telling me it can't open it up in Jukebox.

I WILL GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS. I mean, I have an HP media center PC. What the heck am I supposed to do with this thing if I can't make an audio file??

Jo......pretty please. tell me what I have to do, okay??
mel

Ok I hooked up my mic and tested my set up.
made a recording and the first 2 times I tried to email it to myself it had an error message too.

then
I recorded another one - did save as- ___ and saved it to a new folder I made on my desk top- named it "recordings"}

emailed it to myself and that one worked.

So I should make a new folder and put it on my desktop and then do a recording and save it to the new folder??

Okay, I'll give it a try. Either that, or bang my head against the wall.

lol Melody
------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, just did exactly what you said to do. First I didn't know how to save it to the Recordings folder on my desktop but figured that part out. Now I'll make the recording and see if I can attach it and email it to myself.

Getting interesting. Be right back.
mel

-----------------------------------------

NOW I OFFICIALLY GIVE UP. I emailed it to myself. When I tried to open the attachment it indicated it would open up in Jukebox. It is set as a default. (Maybe that is the problem), Maybe I should select something else to open up a wav file, but I don't know what that should be.

Anyway, I clicked on open up inJukebox. The little window popped up. I clicked on the wav file and NOTHING HAPPENED.

I'M GOING TO BED. I'M DONE.

I just downloaded Winamp this morning - radio, TV, songs, videos
seems easier to do searches for all of those too.

So winamp or windows media player are the only ones I have loaded.
when you have more than one player loaded sometimes it doesn't know which one to use for playing misc files like that.

I'm not sure about Jukebox - you might look for something called file associations in the properties or settings.
winamp has a tab for keeping file associations.
but the recording plays back on the win media player??
for me anyway.

Well, I do have windows media player, itunes, real player, and god only knows what else Alan has downloaded.

I will try this ONE MORE TIME.

I will do the recording, save it to my documents as wav file (or sound file, whatever it indicates), do the email to myself thing attaching it to the email.

Then......and this will be interesting (I think the whole thing centers on how I open up the attachment). If this sucker plays my voice back to me, I'll come here so fast you won't know what hit you.

Look for a post that says HIP HIP HOORRRAAAY!!!

Then you'll know I succeeded.

Take care, and thanks much for all your sage, wisdom, and cool techno advice. Not that I can apply any of it. But thanks anyway. lol
