go to alans saved bookmarks file folder and right click on it - then go to properties - click that - near the top area it should say Type of file or file type..

what does it say in that section?
json or firefox document?

or try importing them into IE first and then from IE use import to get them to FF.
For IE just use File in the main bar of IE and go down to import/export.

Hi. it says NEITHER.

It just says ONE WORD.

FILE!!!

That's right. where it says File type, it indicates FILE!!

So it's not json and it's not Firefox

so I'm screwed, right?

and it's 418 kb (whatever that is).

Oh, I'm screwed all right.

I wonder if I bring both computers to my computer guy and he can copy the bookmarks to the new computer.

I am so stupid I really screwed this up.

all this new technology is really draining to me.

I never spent so much time, learning new things, downloading Java, installing this, downloading that!!!

And most of my friends just use their phones to go on the internet. I don't have one of those.

good Grief.

I do thank you very much though.

Melody

You still have the old computer right? everything is still there?
just plug it back in long enough to re save and recopy the bookmark file- maybe something got scrambled somehow...

or if you have a spare Ethernet cable hook the new one to the old one via the cable, but if there's any chance the old one might have a bug, best to not even try it. but you could copy the bookmarks straight across that way.

But might be best to let the pc guy do it if you can, just to make sure it goes well.

supposedly there are ways to make 7 look like xp -

I feel for you Mel.... I don't like Win7 either.

You are trying to do this on HIS side of the computer?

You did make two partitions?

(I hate the way Win 7 handles photos! What a pain!)

No, there is no HIS and no Melody. I told Alan we should have two accounts and he could sign into his I could sign into mine.

Didn't go over well.

I really don't care. He's not going to jeopardize this computer by downloading anything without asking me first. He knows I'll kill him.

I did the plug ins and now he has his games online so that's good.

I am asking a guy on this forum who is a computer guy. Allengamer. He's on my FB friends list and he's been helping me.

He knows all about my bookmarks problem.

If he has no solution, first I'll bring my flash drive to the computer guy. I'll let him check the file(or is it a folder) named Alan's favorite places.

Then I'll see what he tells me.

And I have a question about Windows 7. I set up this computer yesterday and it prompted me to create an account and I did and I had to select a PW and I did. So how come I have to log in when I open the computer in the morning, and every time I leave it for let's say 30minutes, that when I come back it prompts me again to log in.

I never had to do that with XP.

Do all of you have to repeatedly log in with Windows 7?

I mean, it's not a tremendous issue, I just wonder why this is the case.

Thanks,

Melody
Oh, Mrs. D. I have a medical question for you involving a 9 year old child. Perhaps you can enlighten me on something. I'll post it on the PN Boards and you can either answer there or PM me? You'll understand why when you read it.

Thanks

log on & PW -
I haven't ever used 7 but if parts are like xp , in control panel under display - screensaver settings - that is where you can change it to a longer time - or set it so you don't have to re log in upon resuming use.

If Win 7 control panel isn't the same at all - then do a google search for how to change the screensaver setting on win 7.

it's pretty similar-
[Here are steps to disable the password after waking from sleep.

1. Click Start.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Click Power Options.
4. Click on “Require Password on Wakeup” on the left pane.
5. Select the option “Don’t require a password.”
Note: when your computer wakes from sleep, anyone can access the data because the computer isn’t locked.]

and another setting to check -

[Go to the "Control Panel".
Click on "Appearance and Personalization".
Click on "Change Screen Saver".
Unclick "On resume, display logon screen".

This will solve ALL the above problems.]

Okay, I figured out how to find the Power settings in windows 7 and I found where you can select it to either put a password word in when you wake it up, or you don't have to put a password in.

guess which little circle was selected?? DON'T PUT A PASSWORD

So how come I get prompted to put a pw in?

Aha A NEW CHALLENGE!!!

And I did the screensaver thing. Thanks for that. It won't prompt me every time it wakes up.

If I only have to do it first thing in the morning, that's no big deal. Thanks much.

And get ready for my post about what just happened with the computer guy!!!

OMG!!

lol, Melody

Okay, took a walk a few blocks from me and brought my flash drive with me. I told the guy my whole story. He put the flash drive in one of his computers, read it and said "This is not a favorites folder, this is only a file".

So I said "Oh, I guess I didn't know what I was doing"

Then he tries to show me what to do and I interrupted him and said "Have you lost your mind?" and we both burst out laughing.

Then I asked him if I could bring in both computers and could he do it for me. To copy the favorites from one Mozilla browser to the browser on the new computer? He said fine and no charge. I just looked at him and we both laughed.

So I go home, get the two computers, go there and he hooks them up. I was there for 2 hours. I kid you not. He could not get Mozilla Firefox to import the favorites. Then he copied the favorites to Internet Explorer.

THANK GOD, because who the h cares where the favorites are? I can always go one by one and get them over to Mozilla.

But this guy was determined so I watched him work. He went to Mozilla, up to Bookmarks, went to Show All Bookmarks, selected Import option, he selected "import from Internet Explorer" and it started copying and we both got excited.

Then we get a message "FIREFOX HAS STOPPED WORKING", blah blah.

Every time he tried to do this we got the same message. After 2 hours (and people were coming in and he was helping them but he always came back to my stuff. So I just thanked him, gave him a tip for his kids (he did not want to take it) but I said "no, you really tried, and you got it on Internet Explorer"

I came home and I DON'T EVER WANT TO DO ANY COMPUTER STUFF FOR A LONG LONG TIME.

I mean, I'll go on the internet and do my letters in Microsoft word, but no more files, folders, UGH!!!

I do not understand how the geeks can learn this in 2 seconds.

I'm 64 years old and the guy said "Oh my god, you know a lot about computers". It seems he doesn't know anyone over the age of 50 who knows how to use one.

Good Grief.

But hey, I'm up and running and that's all I care about.

Now I'm going to my kitchen and make some chicken.

I wish I were an Amish housewife.

lol
