Yes , I'm pretty sure sleep and standby are the same thing.

Oh, so there was sound with the new hard drive in - and then it stopped having sound?
no sound at all for the whole computer or just for the video?

does it have the speaker icon showing in the task bar?
you can right click it to check properties/settings too
