Hi all:

This is not about MY computer. This is my landlord's computer.

They were having trouble with their hard drive, so, someone came in, took out their hard drive, and installed a brand new one.

So now they have VISTA.

I was just down in their place, and they asked me "how do you put this in sleep mode?" and I said: "well, I'm not sure about Vista, but there is a button on the keyboard (and sure enough it was the half moon button), so I said "this has got to be it. I pressed the button and nothing happened.

Am I incorrect? Is this not the way to put a computer using Vista, well isn't this how one puts a computer into sleep mode??

I then did a search (within the help menu of Vista), and I put in "how to put computer in Sleep Mode?" and the options give were quite a few, but the first option was:

1. Why can't I put my computer into sleep mode?, and the answer was "you may not be able to put it into sleep mode unless you go into the BIOS configuration (believe me, I'm not going to do that).

I just wanted to know if I was correct in pressing that little button on their keyboard (the one with the half moon).


Now another thing. They have no sound. I checked the speaker volume thing, and it was find. We tried to listen to one of my videos on youtube. No sound.

Their speakers are plugged in.

I gather the next step (I could not stay because I can't even straighten up because of my arthritis), but I gather that the way to test speakers, is to go to control panel, and seek out where they say speakers, and do a speaker test, right. and then if no sound, just trouble shoot????

Oh what else did I have to ask you?? Oh yeah, when the guy who came to their house removed their hard drive, he said "you have to return this to Dell", (I gather the guy was from Dell).

They have photos on the old hard drive so she wants to bring the old hard drive to a computer store, and have them copy the photos to a cd rom, then she can insert the cd rom into the cd rom drive and put the photos onto the NEW hard drive.

Do pc computer stores do this?? And do you know approx how much they would charge for this??

And can't she just (like the steps to do the shutdown), only it give you options, and one of those options is STANDBY??

I don't have Vista so I don't know.

Oh, about the speakers. I asked her "did you have sound earlier? and she said "I had sound all day, (so it can't be drivers, right??)

Yes , I'm pretty sure sleep and standby are the same thing.

Oh, so there was sound with the new hard drive in - and then it stopped having sound?
no sound at all for the whole computer or just for the video?

does it have the speaker icon showing in the task bar?
you can right click it to check properties/settings too

I did check the speaker thing on the bottom of the task bar. I wanted to make sure it was not set to MUTE. It was not.

And there is no sound from anywhere.

I'll probably go in that house sometime today or tomorrow.

I'll teach her how to put it on standby.

I was wondering, when I pressed the half moon thing on the keyboard, why it didn't go into sleep mode.

Then I did the search in help in the Vista main menu and there was an option that said "

"How come I can't put my computer to sleep"?

Sure enough it said that it could be that it's not configured (or something like that).

Years ago, (20) computers were much easier. They were plug and play, and you just went on the internet.

TODAY, HOLY COW, You have to learn a whole bunch of stuff.

I'm looking at my landlord's daughter (who had the speaker problem) and she can go on the internet but she has never downloaded stuff, (she knows absolutely nothing about drivers, etc..

Oh, here's a funny (true) story.

About 3 years ago, when she first got the older computer (it was brand new at the time). well for whatever reason, it kept shutting down and restarting.

so of course, they called me into their basement (where they live, and keep the computer). They own the house they live in, and they also own my house.

So I go down and there is this computer that would not stay on. I kept scratching my head and because they had dsl, I phoned the computer people.

They told me, "you have a worm". A trojan, (or something to that effect).

Now picture this. I'm in a basement filled with 50 people having coffee and cake. The whole italian family was there and NO ONE KNEW ANYTHING WHATSOEVER ABOUT COMPUTERS. They had just bought one in case their grandkids came over.

So I'm on the phone with the computer people and I'm being told "You might have a worm". So I exclaimed:

"I have a worm in the computer????"

Well, when one of the english speaking people in the house translated that THE COMPUTER HAS WORMS IN IT....

You should have seen the look on the faces of the people over the age of 60.

They started backing away from the computer. My landlord's mother kept saying to me in italian.

This thing has worms??? Where are the worms?? I don't see any worms"

I had to get the computer guy to explain to me what the heck a worm was.

Then I had to translate the whole thing as best I could (with the help of the other english speaking person).

To this day, everyody else in that place (except for the younger ones) have never gone near that computer.

They think it was infected with worms.

I will never forgot the laugh I had that day. And believe me, no one else in that room was laughing.

To put Vista to sleep, click on the Windows icon bottom left corner -blue ball with 4 coloured squares. You can choose, standby (powersaving), lock or sleep. Sleep is the little arrow on the right of the bar, next to the padlock.
Vista is a new operating system, and a lot of things that worked previously may not work. Check for new drivers, or replace components. No easy solution-some things have been made obsolete by Vista.

I just went down to my landlord's apartment and I was starting to tell her about the standyby mode. She told me "I just phoned Dell and they are sending me someone'. I said "oh, that's good, by the way, did you tell them that you have no sound coming out of your speakers?" and she said: "No I forgot".

So I said "okay, this is important, BEFORE YOU CHANGED THE HARD DRIVE, YOU HAD SOUND, RIGHT?? and she said "right?"

So I then said: 'After the guy put the new hard drive in, did you have sound? and she said "No".

So I said "You need to download new drivers, don't worry it's easy".

She said: "I need to download drivers, what are drivers?"

Sigh.
this is going to get VERY COMPLICATED.

So I think I shall let the guy from Dell come there and do whatever it is the guy from Dell is going to do.

She is exactly where I was 15 years ago, when I got my first PC. I was completely clueless.

Oh well, we have to learn sometime now don't we??

Sounds like you are on the right track.
I bought a complete new PC system a year ago and it came with Vista. All was OK until I downloaded video from my camcorder-no sound.

Contacted various people involved with the PC and its components-no luck. Read on Google that Vista is very fussy about sound cards, and generally speaking you need a Vista certified compatible sound card. So the new sound card supplied with the Vista system was not compatible. I had to have a new one fitted.

Old ones may work to some extent, or as in your case, not at all.

It is unwise to put Vista into an older PC. Not only will some components not work properly, but software also.
At last most firms have put out patches for their software. At the start, they hadn't, so just might be lucky. At least now you know what to expect!

I have a question.

I have a two year old HP MEDIA CENTER PC, all bells and whistles.

It has Windows XP.

It has stuff on the front of the tower that I have no idea what these things are for, and I don't expect I'll need to know any time soon. I believe they are for camcorder hookups or digital cameras. I have neither. I do use a webcam and upload videos to youtube so I do KNOW SOMETHING. lol

It has all these slots for Smart/Media/sD
MMC/sd
CompactflashI/II
Memory Stick/PRO

So what are these things??

Also it has three holes,
green, pink, and green, and the third one has a little icon of headphones on top (now this is on the Tower).

Now how come there's a place to put headphones, when I already have headphones attached to the monitor?? We always keep headphones because my computer is up against a wall and at night when Alan goes on, he can listen to music and watch videos and no one next door is disturbed.

So why is there a headphone jack on the monitor, and another one on the computer tower??

I'm going to take a photo of this, so you can tell me what all these slots and holes are.

Melody... for one.....I am NO computer wizz. I learnt everything I know (and that isn't really a whole lot) from either my daughter or people like these wonderful people in this forum.

I too have a jack for earphones, and I have built in speakers. What I did try last week, was to put a set of ear phones into that jack, and I could hear what was happening, but no-one else could. That's a plus. It gave me sound, and the others got peace & quiet.

I was going to try and answer a bit more of your question as some of your pictures look a bit like the front of my computer, but I didn't want to end up looking like a complete fool.
