Default Editting photographs

I've been learning how to edit my own photos as well as pictures downloaded from the Internet.

I think I have the basics under control, and I've recently learnt how to add my own words to a picture ..... thank you Mwah ... but what I'd like to do next is alter the picture around.....eg. removing bits, or adding to... the picture that I've chosen.

It seems that Photoshop does that, but is there a free program that anyone uses that does the same thing?

Thank you!
