I'm getting a new computer on Saturday and I'm taking my systom down tomorrow to have them grab all my stuff from the old and put it on the new...my question is...

I can't find my disc that I used to download my printer. Is there any way I could get a new one or am I out of luck...need to buy new printer?

You should be able to download the drivers for the printer.

Usually you can go to the company website that made your printer and find the driver download for your particular model. If that doesnt work try a google search for your printer name and model.. example (cannon 4850 driver), this should bring up a page full of places to download the drivers.

Yeah what he said Tammi, look for 'support' 'downloads' 'drivers' a drive file will be there for your printer

it should be in one of those three sections

and if the site has a search engine box type in Printer Drivers, that should bring you right too it

Also that way you will get the most updated version for your printer and any other drivers you might need for other devices.

the only thing I would add would be that you'll probably get Vista with your new puter.

And since your printer is probably geared toward XP.

it might created a slight problem. (MIGHT)

IF that happens, download the driver for the XP to a USB stick (or write it to a CD)

then, run that driver and then do the upgrade to Vista.

hopefully, you won't have to do that at all...

Agree with all of the above! Last year I got a new PC - and yes it was on Vista. So then I needed new printer drivers and a new driver for scanner & fax.

So I searched by company name (HP, epson ettc), then support or vista drivers, then I was able to find new drivers for my stuff. It's a pain to do, but necessary.

One bit of advice when you get a new Vista computer - I would turn OFF the "automatic update" feature for Vista. When it wants to update something - I'd do web searches on the subject and check to see if the update will do more harm than good... (Like the "update" that so famously ruined my Word 2007)

Oh I wish I would have had the information from this board two years ago when I purchased my new HP Pavillion PC.

It came with XP. I had a beautiful $250 HP Photosmart printer. It WAS NOT COMPATIBLE with my windows xp.

So I gave it away and purchased a piece of junk. a $59.00 printer. A tinker toy. I had no idea I could download drivers.


Well, I am NOT ONE TO TAKE BACK SOMETHING ONCE I GIVE IT AWAY.

But I did tell the people "when you are finished with this printer, do not throw it away, give it back to me". I never told them why. I wouldn't do that. They said "fine".

that printer was the best printer I ever had.

This one is a piece of junk.

It pays to be cautious with Vista, as it is a new platform and not all programs run well on it, even though they may claim to be Vista compliant.
my all new PC on Vista Home Premium was lightning fast for 18 months, or about 2 weeks ago. It would say"not responding" to every program, then would hang there. Any new action took about 5 minutes. Wouldn't shut down etc.
When turned off and restarted, wouldn't start properly-again just hung there. Used the DVD to reboot, but no better.
Took it to a computer shop who had it for a week and said that after they cleaned out a few files it was OK.
And it was-back as new.
Within a few days though it had the same problems. Took me a full day to get it to start properly.
Did a Google search on the problem and found that it was happening identically to others-but none had found a solution.
My thoughts were that there was probably some software that was in conflict, so while it was going I uninstalled quite a few of minor software progs-various things that were supposed to check for problems etc and fix them.
So far so good.
Even the sound card that came with this PC was not compatible, even though it was on Vista only.
So I would suggest great caution in downloading any of the multitude of software programs that claim to be vital to your PC's health. They may be lethal!

my biggest problem when igo to a clients office or a home to fix and repair computers. it is usually malware and spyware infested on peoples systems.

i cant stress enough to people to update windows constantly...

update all drivers constantly. sound cards, modems, video cards etc. it best to do from the manufacturers website. usually under support...then drivers
