I'd go ahead and do the windows updates , but I suggest doing the custom option so you can at least read what is being updated.
I did have trouble with the SP3 update {my computer hardware didn't like it I guess LOL}- but you can choose to not get that one and still get everything else. If you go to the Microsoft update website you can get more info on what is important and what isn't, you can check what you want.
