Default Plugins

A good friend sent me a Christmas email that has a variety of Christmas carols in it, but I got the following message when I opened the email.

....additional plugins required to display all the media on this page....click here to instal plugin.

I'm not happy simply clicking on this and downloading an unidentified program from an unidentified source. How do I find out what plugin is required and how to get it without clicking the X on this notice?

I have pictures on this email, but no sound. I do have sound on all my other emails that require it.

It doesn't say down at the bottom of your page, when you hover the cursor over the info?

most likely it is for java, quick time or flash..
but it would be nice to know for sure before you click it.

No, there's nothing there when I hover.

I updated Java yesterday so I'll go check my media player and flash to see if there are any updates available there.

Thank you for those suggestions.

I've now updated my Media player and also my Flash player, but the music still won't play!

What would be the chance of picking up a virus if I clicked onto the X where it says download plugin? I'm running McAfee.

Gosh, I don't know really, Koala. What browser are you using?

If this was on my screen when I was trying to play something and I'd checked all my other settings and they were in order then I'd just do it.

Thanks Lara, I'm using Firefox, but I suppose I could try IE.

I daresay that the plugin is probably safe.... but ....

I use Firefox too.

If you've upgraded it recently it might just mean that you need to upgrade your Media Player. I found a site, and I'm sifting through it right now. I thought it might give some answers. That's if you're using Windows Media Player.

Thanks Lara, but I've done that already.

I think I'll contact the person who sent it to me and see what they have on their PC, or whether they had to click on the plugin as well.

hello Koala77,

i’m new here on neuro talk… i should introduce myself pretty soon on the new member introductions forum…

as your mention on your last post, if i’d receive something like that from a friend (as it was happening to me very often when i was still working), i would e-mail him/her back asking more about it… i don’t take too much chances when comes to lots of stuff people e-mail to whoever they have on their address book…

i have ie for now, but due to technical problems with ie (discussed on another website) i’m considering downloading firefox… however, apparently some files will only work with ie…

good luck ! and have a great weekend !

you might want to ask your friend what program was used to make this christmas card. different programs require different plugins or codecs.

also not just updating your flash or media player but also the sound drivers for your particular sound card can affect this.

there have been a rash of e cards that have viri attached to them lately so being careful is always the best side to take,

if you do download a plugin for anything and experience problems you can turn them off in the browsers you use. the man problem with multiple browsers is the advent of designing programs that work with all browsers.

good luck

roger.
