Default New Program for Christmas.....

My daughter bought me a new program for my computer for Christmas (one that I'd really been wanting) and it won't download!

She actually bought me two different ones.... both from the same manufacturer and one has installed, but the one I wanted most.... hasn't.

It downloads so far... then I get an error message.

In the FAQ's of the download instructions I found the following.... but I want to know if it's safe to follow each of these steps.

I get nervous when I have to alter things!

I scanned their instructions (sorry about the slant.... ....):

I'm trying to download it onto my desktop which runs XP, but it wouldn't instal on my laptop either, and that's running Vista! It doesn't have instructions for Vista.

Lightbulb We had to do this once.

A program we had installed a new folder in Windows, which
duplicated one Windows already had. This caused our computer to crash all the time (freeze). What was happening is that the computer was going back and forth between the duplicate files.

An error message would come up on reboot with a # ..which we went on the net for, and found the exact same directions.

We did it and it worked. Only difference here is that your program knows this will happen, and is warning you in advance.

Gosh, I am trying to remember what the program was, but it was 3 yrs ago and I just cannot at the moment recall it.

I would venture to say....I would look at this program, before doing the procedure. Search for it on the web connected to installation problems. I'd do this myself, because like you, I get the creeps with some computer functions. I usually call my son, etc and he sighs alot. LOL

Many computer help forums are out there. I often find answers to my problems by searching them.

if it happened like MrsD said, that you have installed it twice, what happened was that you've created more than one registry and they are now fighting each other. Then you'll have to delete the old registry and get to the newest like she suggested.

my suspicion is that you have run out of RAM and is not able to handle the memory of this program(may I ask what it is?). That's usually the first tell tale sign...the lack of memory...

if that isn't the case and you are able to download it, and you did download it more than once, then it becomes a registry issue..

that becomes a little bit more trickier and I'd try mrsD's suggestion.

do you have the specs on this program? It's usually in the back of the box under "sys requirements"

see what all the requirements are and see if your puter meets it. I think it might be the memory issue.

Every once in awhile i'll have that duplicate thing happen, and I have to go into the program remover in the control panel, then use ccleaner or that type of program to clear out any remaining bits left in the registry.
one time I had to use the regedit to find the problem and delete it there.

but that is tricky and I did a lot of searches for info before trying it

did I mention that you have to be very careful?? Yeah...be careful...

Thank you all.

The program, which is a clipart one, downloads to about 90% then stops each time. It requires 50MB disc space and although there's a possibility that my desktop could be running out of RAM, that would not be the case with my laptop which is new.

and....NO....I would not touch the BOOM button Moi! Murphy's Law reigns at my house, so if something could go wrong.... it will go wrong.

ahhh...vista...

well, unfortunately, Vista's compatibility gets a LOW rating in my personal very opinionated book...LOL

I am almost willing to bet that if you go to this program's website, they'll offer some sort of update to download this program to your laptop which runs vista...

is their website included on the box??? Go to their website and check their FAQ's on updates for windows vista and see if that resolves your problem.

In that case, it is a Window's compatibility issue...

btw, windows 7 will be out next year and we can all say buh-bye to vista....LOLOLOLOL

I have XP on my desktop and Vista on the laptop, and I agree with the Vista thing.

There is a website so I'll check it out. Thank you.

koala,

hello,

i will ask the obvious.

1. did you confirm before downloading this program would run on your computers. by checking the systems requirements for the software to make sure you can run it.

do you have enough disk space to run this program?

is your account on your computer set to allow downloads and install programs?

now for the un obvious.

1. you stated you installed one version but the second will not intall.

usually if this happens the program is stil running in the background.
hit ctrl-alt-del on keyboard and see if the program is running under processe. you can maximise the window and colums in here to see what the orgram is used for and where it is located. then click on the process and hit end process. this wil not harm your computer.

then once the process is stoped try to install the second program. i usually reccomend to create a seperate folder in your hard drive. then install it to that folder.

i hardley ever hit run for a program when it asks to download and hit run. i usually download it to a folder on my desktp then run it. that way if there is a problem i dont have to re download it again and again....

have fun.

roger.

Vista is not my favorite either...changing back to XP as soon as I back up all my files...just to be safe.
