I did what Roger instructed. I went to Disk Defragmenter and tried to defrag.
here's the message I received "VOLUME HP_RECOVERY (D) has only 11% free space available. Disk Defragmenter requires at least 15% usuable free space. There is not enough disk space available to properly complete. etc. Delete some unneeded files on your hard disc (or drive, I forgot) Now I have no idea what files I have on D. I thought the only hard drive I used was C. Please tell me what files I have on D and that I don't need, so I can get rid of them. thanks much. Obviously I haven't run a disc defrag in quite a while. Melody

howdy Mel if you go to start button then click control panel then find add remove software click on it. that will bring up a list of programs installed on your PC, go through it and if you find ones you dont use anymore or old games you dont play click on them then click on uninstall, you may be able to clean up some space did you run disk clean up also it too can clean up some space, that is in the start, accessories, systems tools, disk clean up

It told me I freed up 236,127kb of space. Is this a lot of space??? Do I need to reboot the computer before doing the defrag?? Thanks much. Melody

thats not enough space you can try the restart, I personally would do the control panel one and see if there are programs you dont use and or just try restarting it, wish you were closer i would just come by and show you

HOWEVER, I DID DO A PARTIAL DEFRAG. I have no idea what else to call this. I had two lines to select from. The second line was Hard Drive C. I chose that, and clicked on the option. DEFRAGMENT. After it was finished, this is the report that I got. VOLUME HP PAVILLION C VOLUME SIZE - 178 GBS CLUSTER SIZE - 4 KB USED SPACE - 31.19 GB FREE SPACE - 147 GB. Is this good? lol Melody

No expert here, but hubby ran into that same message once. He hadn't run it once in 2 years.
![]() I got it to run by restarting his computer and shutting down all the programs he didn't need running to run defrag. ( Alt, Ctrl, Delete to open Task Manager)

I think the {D} in your case is your recovery and back up files - I hope you didn't delete those??? those are your safety net if you don't have a CD for reinstalling. {but that drive shouldn't really be showing to you or alan - it should be set as hidden so nobody deletes it by accident... ![]() Did you ever make those recovery disks it wanted you to make last month? If the D drive is what was deleted go to your recycle bin and restore all that info. only clean and defrag the C drive unless you know you have more than 1 actual hard drive in your machine. some people add many but since yours is factory it should only have 1 hard drive installed. What your recovery files are on is a partition of your C drive and it is called the D drive. In other words your HD is sectioned for safety and the recover files are in that section.

I just choose the C drive and I clicked on defragment. The other drive is supposed to be hidden? Well, when I bring up DISC DEFRAGMENTER, it has two things to choose from. C and D. I didn't choose D, so I gather it's still there? And am I not supposed to defrag D?? Mel

Please forgive me butting in here Mel, but I've been following this information and decided it was time I defragmented as well.
I too would like to ask a related question please. When I went through my installed programs to see if I could delete any, I found the following : Java 6 update 4 Java 6 update 5 ....etc...through to Java 6 update 11 My question is .... can I delete all of the updates except the latest one? Thank you.
