Default DVD recording

Has anyone made the plunge into replacing their VHS recorder with a DVD one?
I'm wanting to do it soon as it is a nuisance trying to retain unwatched items on tape and then record new ones, and forgetting where anything is in sequence.
But having read several reviews of DVD recorders it seems that they can be a bit technically challenging for anything over simple recording.
