Possibly it's a firewall issue from what I'm reading so far, and those confuse me to death. I'm still reading...

you might also try your system restore { start/accessories/system tools}

especially if you can come close to a date when it started acting up??

save any special files to make sure you don't lose anything.

I used sys restore a couple of times when i had some major problems {lost some info} and it brought me back to where I could find the info again.
But puter had other problems{viruses}and Hrdrive eventually croaked

also use the Disk Cleanup tool if you haven't done that yet.

Mozzilla Firefox or the new Netscape 8 or 8.1? seem to be better browsers than IE.
the new Netscape has built in security features.
free to download @ mozzilla.com and netscape.com {look for download section}

you might look at trying the new linux operating systems {less viruses}
look at some of the older threads -named duel boot {should be dual boot}, linux ubuntu, ect.
You can get them quick in a Linux computer magazine $10. bucks or so
just put in the CD or DVD??make sure you get the right kind for your computers player.
you can "test" drive em by running from the CD/DVD player.
only prob I have now is the wireless connection- so use a wire until that's figured out.
or win XP why it's called dual booting- choose at boot up to use the Linux OS or windows OS.
one on sys restore too

Hi, Jo:) I'd be happy to use the Verizon browser if I could just get the
buttons to show up at the top of the screen.:( I still can't figure out
why it's doing that.:confused:

I did a system restore early on when I'd only had my computer a few days, and it weirded out a lot of things...

So I'm a little leary of them now....

I found this (a few times actually with ppl getting the same thing you are. it sounds simple and worth trying. i'm still investigating. i found other information regarding malware, trojans, etc. but this seems easier to start with and i found a few sites with this same issue and resolve):

My collegue didn't user her computer for a week, and when she turned it on yesterday everything was fine EXCEPT Internet Explorer 6 is working extraordinarily slow, especially when it comes to opening pop-up windows.

She's checked in Firefox and the same sites work fine so it's definitely an IE problem. Also she's tested the broadband and LAN connections and they are fine.

Last night I scanned uin Nortons AntiVirus 2004, Spybot Search & Destory, Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Microsoft Anti-Spyware, and nothing came up (except for a few cookies in Ad-Aware, which I quarantined).

I also checked at WindowsUpdate and the computer is all up to date.

The Opera browser and Netscape are also fine. Does anyone know why IE would be running so slowly?

So far as I can tell my collegue doesn't have any unusual plugins or anything istalled.

Can anyone help?

Found the solution (after a few hours of trial and error!)...

In Internet Explorer, go:

Tools > Internet Options > Programs > Manage Add-ons...

Look for an add-on called "req.dat", select it and then choose "Disable" below.

Click OK then OK again, then restart Internet Explorer.

I don't know what req.dat is (its Type is listed as "Browser Helper Object), I just found it was this one through a process of trial and error.

I'm not young enough to know everything.

I might have missed something,
can you list what you are using ?

Win XP? home or Pro?
what browser for internet MS IE, Firefox, netscape ect?
Verizon ?? DSL ? wire or wireless? do they have there own browser??

I use verizon DSL with a wireless set up but I don't remember a browser- unless it asked and I said no.
or are you at the verizon /yahoo webpage or the verizon/msn webpage?
any ad ware/virus/or spyware running at this time? what kind?

sorry about the 20 ??
but it helps me get it clear in my brain.

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 02:55 PM

I would run my virus scan first because most of the sites I visited with this issue is due to malware & trojans.

If it finds nothing, then it could be a conflict somewhere...

Can you do that first and let us know?

I clicked on Tools > Internet Options > Programs > ...but there was nothing
that said Manage Add-ons.:confused:

I'm using Windows XP Pro (even though it's a home computer)

The Verizon is DSL and it's the Verizon Yahoo browser.

Jomar 09-17-2006 03:04 PM

for the verizon browser does the whole thing seem to be too big for your screen?
maybe try display settings in control panel -
control panel/display/settings
try a smaller size /less pixels?? just to see if that helps?

or does your monitor have adjustments buttons on the front - maybe try those for smaller or adjust side to side /top to bottom??

Is the verizon browser the only one you have?

does internet explorer not work either?

on that [I clicked on Tools > Internet Options > Programs > ...but there was nothing
that said Manage Add-ons.]
it's down towards the bottom a button took me a minute to find it - but no "req.dat" on mine. but mine works fine when I use it {rarely} except it doesn't like the mcafee security programs very much {have to start IE twice before it loads}
