I was able to schedule this new work to be done April 30th. Gosh that seems like a long time to be dealing with this. I really hope the antibiotics help calm the infection and that that helps with the pain.

Hi catra,

I'm glad you had the exam and x-rays.

I get the feeling based on your description and my clinical experience that your dentist is trying to "retain" teeth that may be questionable. The issue with doing this is that the patient often ends up in the dental chair more often than anticipated and the work just goes on and on. If the patient has been informed of this and they are okay with that, then the dentist will not hesitate to proceed that way.

Although no one wants to admit it... sometimes it is best in the long run to consider removing the teeth that are in guarded to hopeless condition. Then build on what is solid and replace what is lost.

I see this on going dental care situation happen frequently when a patient is not completely informed of just how long term their dental care will be. I just hope your dentist has discussed in detail your dental situation and has offered you all of your treatment options.

I am glad that you are ready to delve in to your dental health. That is really a good thing )

This is a different dentist than the one I saw in January...but they pulled four teeth all at once and those were all pulled because they were infected and HAD to go. It is my understanding that almost every tooth except the bottom front four have cavities. The dentist said that he can visualize the tooth as they were prepping it and he really did not think the tooth would have been infected because it didn't look like it had progressed that far (though it DID have a cavity because apparently they all do).

Our plan is to pull 12 and create that new bridge that uses 13 as an anchor...but we also discussed the possibility of having it go all the way to 14 if 13 doesn't look good when he gets in there. I know my teeth are bad...I really don't fault the dentist for this sort of thing because realistically I know that my whole mouth is in bad shape. When those 4 teeth were pulled in January it did a lot to improve the health in my mouth because all of them were infected.

I think the problem is that yes...we are trying to tackle the worst most obvious areas first...but on the other hand we have to start somewhere because I can't have it all done at once. Though admittedly it seems very tempting to want all my teeth just pulled and get some dentures and move on. I know that's not a good option...but depending on how this plays out I may end up there anyway. Frustrating...but facts are facts.

All I can do now is hope that this is the last obstacle I face this year and that things get resolved with this new plan a few weeks from now when I am able to get in to get this work done. Well...that and hope that the pain meds and antibiotics help enough to get me through until then without being miserable. Despite the pain and everything I am still happy that I have chosen to move forward with treatment. I wish things were going smoother but years of neglect do have consequences and unfortunately it seems to be my time to pay up.

Just wanted to report that the pain seems to be getting better finally after almost a week on the pain meds and antibiotics. I am back to take 2 Tylenol and 2 advil for pain instead of the stronger pain meds and I don't have to take them every 4 hours...more like every 8 and even when the pain starts up again it's not as severe as before. I know the problem isn't solved and won't be until I can get the tooth pulled in a few weeks...but I am relieved to have some relief from this pain.

Of course...over the past week I have been consumed with this terrible exhaustion. I am constantly wanting to sleep and napping for VERY long periods of time (and I NEVER nap...never). Don't know what that is about...am hoping it's from the meds.

Got my infected tooth extracted and the new bridge put in yesterday. I'm feeling really sore this morning and not where I would expect to be sore. The interior side of my mouth above my upper lip in SO sore the entire length of where the new bridge is. There's lots of little bumps and sores and a whole bunch of white stuff. This also appears on the gum line above the bridge.

I saw the dentist this morning for a follow up and they said to just rinse with warm salt water because this is just me "shedding a layer of skin" and that its just because my mouth got so dry when they were working on it yesterday. UGH...at first the dentist's assistant was all, "I don't see any white stuff or bumps" and then it was "that's no bog deal." I know I am likely overreacting because it's sore and not painful like much of the other stuff I've been through...but darn it all I would like for things to just go nicely at least once while I'm getting all this work done.

Any idea how long something like this will remain sore if I do the warm water rinses?

Hi catra,

The sloughing off of tissue up under your lip and on your gum above the bridge can occur for any number of reasons. However, the most common one would be because the dentist had a cotton roll or two up in that area and it got stuck to your dry lip and gum. He then pulled it off without wetting it first. This may have caused an irritation and pulled away some of the oral tissue. You may end up with canker sores up there from the irritation which could take up to 3 weeks to heal.

Rinse with warm salt water gently.... not too salty though. Just a pinch or so of salt in 3 oz of water is adequate. You could also rinse with 100% aloe vera juice which would soothe the irritated tissue. Or if you had an aloe plant you could break off a leaf and scrape out the aloe juice and gently apply it to both areas with a q-tip. It's best to do it especially before you go to sleep at night.... do not remove it just let it sit there while you sleep.

I'm sorry you are uncomfortable. Try to stay positive and know that this too shall pass. Keep us posted

Thanks. I'll be fine...just sore for a while I think. If this is the worst that comes out of this then I will actually be grateful. I'll stick with the rinses and see how it goes. There are a number of little sores in that area now...when the dentist put more cotton up there yesterday I was not a happy camper...but necessary is necessary. Fingers crossed this is the worst I have to deal with this time around.

Thanks again for in the insight and advice.
