Hi Bryanna..
Thanx so much for your response and sorry for double posting. So, I went to see my dentist again and we are both in agreement about the extraction. He has put me on another course of stronger antibiotics which I am to start 3 days before the extraction (which is scheduled for Monday) and to carry on for 2days after. My ownly concern is that the swelling didn't decrease with the previous antibiotics and if it doesn't with this next course will that make the anaesthetic ineffective. Btw I don't know if we have oral surgeons available in Malawi (where I come from). What is your concern about my dentist doing it. Thanks for your help. Quote:

Hi malawi,
Hopefully this second round of antibiotics will reduce the swelling and inflammation which would make the effect of the anesthetic more profound. Please make sure to take it as directed. It is best to have a dentist who is very experienced with oral surgery rather than someone who basically just does restorative dentistry because you want the extraction to be done well and the bone to be thoroughly cleaned up. Do you know if your dentist does a lot of extractions? Perhaps you could look up oral surgeons in a Malawi phone directory online? Bryanna Quote:

Hi Bryanna..
Its me again. I had my extraction done and all appears to be well...except for the fact thst I still hsve the hard fistula in my gum and it appears to be going no where. My dentist says its because the tooth is a lower and the infection will take time to drain. I should wait another week and we we will review. What is your opinion? I am not in any pain but I am concerned. Please can you advise me. Many thanks.xx QUOTE=Bryanna;977067]Hi malawi, I am in the dental field and can offer you some factual information here. The fact that your dentist couldn't find any odd on this tooth is irrelevant. The tooth is root canaled, therefore, it is infected. All root canaled teeth harbor bacteria that is infectious. The most serious side to what you have has to do with the location of this tooth. Infection and/or any type of oral swelling from an infection in the lower posterior region of the jaw can literally travel to your throat which could close off your airway. So it is imperative to have this tooth removed asap. There is no "curing" this infection other than to remove the source of the infection which is the tooth. To keep the tooth means to keep the infection. In your case, it is best to extract this tooth while you are on these antibiotics because there will be quite a bit of infection at the site and you will want to be covered by the antibiotic. Please don't way to take care of this. You will be okay. Keep us posted....... Bryanna PS.... See an oral surgeon to remove this NOT a general dentist.[/QUOTE] |
