Thank you for being here with your advise. Per this site I am running with no root canal and extraction of tooth number 4. This tooth now has severe pain in the root, its effecting my surrounding teeth, pain when biting down, severe shock in temp, and galvantic shock. Went to my dentist and was suprised to hear fractured root. He wanted me to get a root canal and crown I said hell to the no. Pull it. I called him back 5 days after seeing him and told his office I decided to extract and would he please do it, she asked him, he said it was against his advice but he would do it. Without scaring me too bad, lol is it common for the tooth to break inside the socket while he is pulling it out? It cant be seen on xray, the fracture,. My pain is nothing I have ever had before, its like a socket pain, he explained that all the nerves are firing and thus the pain on the other teeth. He said also once this is gone my other teeth will go back to normal no excruciating pain with temps on the other upper teeth. Keeping fingers crossed. Now I am questioning if its tooth number 4, lol irrational, imaging pulling the wrong tooth. The problem is as you know its not in the tooth, its in the socket, I am willing to bet the fracture is near the gum line this hurts when I touch the area with my tounge. I have been lucky and no infection just huge anxiety, my panic attacks are starting to kick in. I love this dentist, he is straight to the point, not trying to sell you on your other teeth, very conservative. He was very gentle and quick on my last extraction, he put gelfoam in the site and stitched it afterwards as a precaution to dry socket. Because of you alone I didnt even consider a root canal it was an automatic no thank you. Thank you again........

If the tooth has a fractured root a root canal should not have even been suggested. Teeth in this condition can be quite painful... even the slightest touch with your tongue can be painful. The reason for the referred pain to other teeth is because teeth in one area all share the same bundle of nerves. These nerves can also trigger pain to occur along other branches of nerves which could cause pain in other areas as well. So hopefully once this fractured tooth is removed, your referring pain will stop.

It is common for a tooth to be fractured even though the fracture is not apparent on the x-ray. The diagnosis is based on the patients symptoms .... and some times a swelling with develop.

It is always possible for the tooth to break during the extraction. The dentist will keep in mind that he suspects the fracture and hopefully it will come out with no problem.

Try not to worry about it too much

I forgot to ask, should I put an ice pack on the jaw after extraction? His extraction instructions were pretty bad, hardly no info. Since he uses the no-epi numbing, By the time I get home a 10 min. ride I am not numb. Should I take the advil 2 every 4 hours? I am a phobic of any kind of medications, even advil. He prescribed pain killers last extraction and I filled the script in case and then disposed of them. didnt even need one, but my pain was 7 days straight of advil. I remember I went thru 2 bottles and started to get nervous of taking that much advil. My hands are starting to sweat thinking about tomarrow. In the morning I wont be able to eat, when can I have some soup tomarrow, how long should I wait after I get home, thank you again...I was suprised that he said rc too, makes no sense it doesnt stop the fracture pain when biting down you are still left with pain even if a rc worked.

Hi pennye,

Some dentists recommend applying ice packs, 20 min on, 20 min off for the first 24 hours then stop. Some recommend no ice. The oral surgeons that I have worked with do not recommend ice. So ask your dentist what he recommends.

I always tell patients NOT to take pain meds on an empty stomach as that can set you up for some very unpleasant complications. Why aren't you eating in the morning? Are you have iv sedation? If not, then have a light breakfast of something that you enjoy eating. Take advil with your breakfast. This way your blood sugar will remain stable and the pain meds will already be on board. Then have a little something for lunch... take 1-2 more advils.... same at dinner time and before you go to bed.

It is best to prepare a nutritious soft food diet ahead of time so you are not scrambling for something to eat post op. Veggie or fruit smoothies made in the blender are a great source of vitamins. Home made soups another great source.

Regarding his recommendation to do a root canal.... dentists know that a fractured tooth (depending on where the fracture is) is not going to be a healthy tooth irrelevant of what you do to it. But many dentists know their patients do not want to hear they have to have an extraction. SO they sell the patient on the misinformation that a root canal will "save" the tooth. Only to eventually remove the tooth any way.

Try not to feel so anxious about tomorrow... it will be here and done before you know it. Try to focus on what you can do to make sure you have everything in place for an easy and simple post op healing... )

Bryanna, I DID IT.....I had a melt down crying walking to his door, then when I got in the chair, he was even hesitant, I dont blame him who wants to take a tooth the good news is there is not one but 4 cracks in the tooth, he said it was a good idea we got it out. I kept the tooth,. its been 1.5 hrs and wish I would have eaten this morning. Thank you very much for your support, I am a big baby when it comes to anything involving meds and pain. Thank you again, I am so excited to get rid of the severe temp sensitivity on the other teeth. Not to mention get a teeth cleaning and not have galvantic shock.

So you see the tooth was fractured.... thank goodness you went with your instinct and had it removed and not re treated!!

Please take good care of yourself. Have a little something light to eat... not good to take pain meds on an empty stomach. Make a milk shake in the blender
