Hi,
Hoping Bryanna can give me some good advice again ![]() A few months ago I had a tooth extraction which has now healed fine. The problem is I decided to have a tooth extraction on another tooth which was infected at the root tip. The tooth had a post crown which snapped off during the extraction leaving the root behind. The dentist didn't feel able to remove the root and is referring me to hospital which will take many weeks. The root is now cracked and my worry is that it will be even more prone to a worse infection than was currently there. I now feel in a worse situation than before the extraction was performed. I have a gap, a cracked root and it will be many weeks before someone can even look at it. Will it be OK until I see the surgeon at the hospital or should I be really worried and expect a serious infection to develop now. |

Hi Cordy,
Ugh..... :/ Ideally the root should be extracted as soon as possible after the incident of it breaking off. That root is infected and there was infection already in the bone which was determined by the xray at the time of the extraction. So yes, there is a potential (not a definite) for it to become a larger infection. Is there any way you can get in to see an OS sooner? Can you see a private one rather than at the hospital? Hi Bryanna,
Thank you for replying so quickly ![]() I'm in the UK so unfortunately have to rely on the NHS for referral. I know an oral surgeon can probably easily remove what's left but as you say ideally it should be removed ASAP. The thought of it potentially causing a serious infection is making me feel sick. I'm not sure what the dentist saw on the X-ray but it was that which made him decide to refer me. Just to add he hasn't given me antibiotics either. Should I insist on having them ? |

Cordy,
Typically root canaled teeth will eventually have a dark area at the root tip because it is the tell tale sign that the bacteria has spread from the tooth into the bone. Depending on how large the dark area was is sometimes indicative of the severity of the infection. I cannot tell you the degree of the infection. You might want to call the dentist who performed the incomplete extraction, tell him you cannot get in to an oral surgeon until..... and ask about being on an antibiotic. Hope this info helps!
