Default New here....

Hello All, new here.....

I had my both of my lower wisdom teeth extracted almost 5 weeks ago and I am still having problems, they were both bony impacted. The OS sutured the right but the left is open.
The sutured right side infected 3 weeks post op. He gave me an antibiotic and said to do peroxide/water rinses twice a day and then salt water rinses in between. So now the sutured side is open from where the pus pushed out. Will I have a blood clot in there? I am still on soft foods, have some swelling. he says that the swelling will go down in 2 weeks and to contact him should I have further problems. He did an x-ray, which showed I have a bone fragment, but he said he does not want to open me back up, if he does not need to. He says he is hoping that it will reattach itself. How long does it take to heal? I wish I would have never had this surgery. I was not having any problems with these teeth, as I am 41, but they said I had a cyst (regular dental x-ray and 3D scan)-so was sent to OS on referral. I am not happy that once opened there was no cyst!
I went back two days later for him to recheck and he said it looks better and to no longer do the salt water rinses and do the peroxide/water rinse 4x day. Well I have been doing that until yesterday. I stopped the peroxide/water rinses. I really do not want the infection to get back to the that nasty pus, as I have been pus free for a few days now. I noticed that my teeth, especially the front teeth now have a line of white, from the middle of the tooth down.

Any help/advise would be great!
Thank you.

Hi dragonfly,

Not all surgical wounds from wisdom teeth need to be sutured closed. Depends on the individual circumstances.

I would seek a second opinion from a different oral surgeon. If you decide to do that then have all of your xrays emailed to him the day you make the appointment so he can see a history on these areas and be more aware of your situation prior to you seeing him.

It has to be determined whether or not that splintered bone needs to be removed as it may be a constant irritant and that could be why this area is having so many problems.

Long term post op complications only occur when there is something wrong. Otherwise, oral surgery heals very quickly when no complications are present.
