Default Periodental Ligament not removed now what??

Hello,

Yesterday I had 3 of my root canal molars extracted by an oral surgeon. One of them was infected already, the second one had a lot of decay so it was ready to go too and I decided to remove the third one cause I know it was a matter of time for it to catch an infection and because I'm well aware of the risks of having root canals. When I told the surgeon about removing the third one he gave me a look, like thinking "are you out of your mind?" and he made me sign an extra authorization stating that it was my choice to get that tooth extracted but I was determined and went ahead and signed it. Now my only concern is that he didn't remove the periodontal ligament on all of my teeth, only on the infected one and I'm very worried about that cause I don't want to get cavitations in the future!! I called the surgeon this morning asking why he didn't remove the periodontal ligament and he said that it gets desintegrated during the extraction and not to worry about getting cavitations!! he's obviously not a biological dentist!! now what should I do?? I hope I can get a response from Bryana!! thank you all!! PS I'm sorry about my english it is my second language!!

Hi Pinal,

Sounds like you have had a rough time of it. Having 3 teeth removed at once is a lot to go through but it sounds like you have done your research and made a decision that you felt was best for you. Were they all next to each other?

Are you certain that the surgeon did not remove the periodontal ligaments of all 3 teeth? It doesn't make sense for him to remove it from just the one and not the other two.

I don't know why the dentist said what he did about the ligament, however, it does not just disintegrate. It becomes a necrotic piece of tissue which may or may not interfere with the complete healing of the bone. Sometimes there will be residual problems and sometimes not. There is no way to know for sure what the long term outcome will be.

Please take good care of your mouth during the healing phase. Do not use any mouthwash as it will irritate the surgical wound. Rinsing with warm salt water 3-4 times a day is recommended to help keep the area clean and th4 bacteria level down.

When do you go back to see the surgeon for your post op appointment?

Hi Bryanna

Thank you for your quick response. You're right I'm going through a living hell with the 3 extractions at the same time, but I know that it's worth it and for my own good.
They were not next to each other, they actually were numbers 47, 24, & 34 so right now it's impossible for me to eat or chew. I can only swallow smoothies, jello, yogurts and smashed beans or veggies.
I know for sure that the dentist cleaned tooth #47 (infected one) very well because after the extraction he scraped off the infection and I'm guessing that the periodontal ligament also. But the other 2 teeth were just extracted with no scraping at all!! That's my main concern right now, because I'm aware of the consequences of leaving periodontal ligaments in.
I've found a biological dentist that told me he can do the procedure of removing anything left behind. I hope he can help me with this, because my gums are healing already. I have an appointment with him July 10th.
And my follow up appointment with the surgeon is July 7th.
Thank you for your help and advice!!
