I had a root canal about a year ago. There was a lot of pain and trauma to the tooth and surrounding gum prior to the root canal. The sharp, terrible pain stopped, but the gum area above the tooth (it's an upper molar) still is very sensitive to pressure from my finger. The tooth also feels sensitive to tapping or wiggling but I can chew just fine without pain. This "pain" or sensitivity has recently gotten a little worse in the last week.
I was very worried about the procedure but went ahead anyway. Now, I think the best course is to extract the tooth. I am assuming I would not go back to the endodontist...Do I just make an appt with an oral surgeon? I read something about making sure that the site is really scraped and cleaned. How do I assure that? Should I find a biologic dentist...or is oral surgeon the right person. I am thinking about getting an implant after that. Any advice on that? This is a scary process. Any advice is welcome! Thanks! |

Hi fedup,
I am in the dental field and wish to clarify that root canaled teeth have an undetermined amount of "retainment" time in someones mouth. Because all root canaled teeth are infected, inflamed and unhealthy, there is no amount of "healthy" time that a rc tooth is retained. The procedure cannot and is not meant to "cure" the infection or stop or prevent the proliferation of bacteria. It is done to "retain" a tooth that will never be healthy again. You said that you removed your teeth and wear a partial denture. Is that denture comfortable for you? Bryanna QUOTE=fedup;1093668]A root canal should last more than a year, me personally I made a decision years ago after listening to family and freinds horror stories to just have them pulled, along with partials but i'm in my 50's. Implants ??? i guess.[/QUOTE]
