Default Hi pixiedust

I am so glad the proceedure is over for you. I hope you are resting comfortably at home, and that you feel better. I know you were too in pain to contact your origional dentist, but I sure would folllow up and maybe report him. Brayannas comments about it sums it up pretty well. He didn't do right by you and should pay for your surgery to fix what he failed to do right to begin with. I listen to alot of posts and I feel bad when we put our health into the hands of those who do not perform well. We don't know who the bad ones are until something goes wrong and we question it. My first neuro surgeon didn't do right by me eithor, so I know that frustrating feeling. That doctor was responsible for the reason why I had my second fusion. I hope that this never happens to eithor of us again. Please be good to yourself, and lay low. enjoy your downtime, and I know your healing will do just fine. ginnie

This is great advice!

I would suggest that when using vitamin D that it be vitamin D3 cholecalciferol which is metabolized more efficiently by the body. Same form of vitamin D that we obtain from the sun. The supplement that I have used for several years with great success is by a company called Biotics Research and the product is called Bio-D Mulsion Forte. It is an emulsified liquid that contains 2000 IU's per drop. Very readily absorbed by the body, just like the sun! Best price online is usually from vitacost.com.

Vitamin C is also essential for our overall health. The best way to take C is to start out slowly with no more than 250 mgs per dose twice a day and gradually work up the dose to bowel tolerance. Some people will get diarrhea from too much vitamin C at any one given time.... so best to start out slow and slowly increase. Two really good products are.... 1) INNATE response formula vitamin C-250 made from 100% whole food... 2) World Organic Ascorbyl Palmitate fat soluable vitamin C which works by attaching itself to the cell so the body can utilize it longer.

Another supplement that provides nutritional support to our immune system and is an essential daily requirement is a Probiotic. This provides the good bacteria in our digestive tract that is necessary to fight off those offenders that compromise the integrity of our digestive health such as antibiotics, stress, processed foods..... etc. I have used Culturelle for many years and I rarely get sick.... not even a cold ;-)

Thanks Stacy for bringing this up.... supplementing with nutriceuticals is very important!

As Bryanna has pointed out to all of us, there is probably infection in there that doesn't show up yet on x-ray, and ultimately it will get worse. So you need to help your immune system fight this battle until you get the infected tooth removed (my case), or if you've already done that and you're still having infection, then adding antioxidants and Vitamin D will help you get well. BUT all the supplements in the world won't hold off the infection forever.

I agree on the probiotic. Many of them must be refrigerated, so read the label or else you wasted your money!

The top supplements I recommend for everyone are:
1) Vitamin D3. It's over the counter. Vitamin D2 is prescription BUT NOT BETTER. In fact, D2 has to be converted to D3 in the body to be utilized, so why not take it the way it's used in your body?
2) Probiotic all the time. If you eat raw foods, you get probiotics, but most people don't (although they should). 70% of your immune system is in your gut, so take care of it with probiotics!
3) Astaxanthin: powerful antioxidant that is fat soluble, so you will store it. it's the same antioxidant found in algae that salmon eat, and it is what makes their flesh pink. For human, great for the immune system by inactivating free radicals and great for your skin by preventing sun damage.

Some additional bonus supplements:
1) Vitamin C when you're starting to feel sick. Take 1000 mg an hour until you get loose stools.
2) Ubiquinol: the active form of Co-enzyme Q 10. As we age, we lose the ability to convert Co-Q to ubiquinol, and it's another antioxidant especially good for cardiovascular function.

And if you still have mercury fillings in your mouth, take chlorella to detox.

Glad to hear that your procedure went well, pixiedust! I'm facing an extraction myself in the near future, so I hope I heal as well.

Hi Stacy,

Great healthy tips!!!!! Thank you! So good to have someone on the dental board who brings knowledge and attention to these things....

Mercury fillings are so toxic... most people have no idea about this and their dentists may not want to get into the subject for personal peer rejection issues....

One major issue with detoxing when you still have mercury fillings is that anything you use to detox or remove heavy metals from the body will draw the mercury from those fillings into the tissue and organs continually so long as the fillings are still present. What are your thoughts on that?

I think the ideal thing to do is have the mercury fillings removed by a dentist who follows the proper removal protocol and generally prefers doing quadrant dentistry so as to minimize the number of appointments for the patient. The patient can take 5-10 chlorella tabs at the onset of that dental appointment to mop up any mercury vapors from the removal process.

I suggest to patients prior to beginning the removal and throughout the entire process, it would be advantageous to supplement with all of the antioxidants as you have mentioned, vitamin D3, multi vitamin from a whole food source in addition to immune support with B complex, probiotics, along with plenty of filtered water daily.

Once all of the mercury and other metals have been removed and replaced with non metal restorations (not including titanium implants) then I think it's best if the detox program is tailored to the individual patient because of possible systemic reactions in some cases. It is ideal if the dentist is knowledgeable enough to prescribe this protocol but if not, then there are physicians who can recommend a protocol to follow. The IAOMT organization has lists of biological dentists and other practitioners who understand this concept and work with their patients through the detox program.

I mention all metal restorations because mercury contaminates all other metals used in the mouth. So just removing the mercury (silver colored ones) is not truly enough. Titanium implants are not in this category because they are placed into the jawbone.

Hope some others are interested in this subject and chime in here.....
Thanks so much for mentioning this!!

Hi Bryanna: Definitely topical application of a slurry of chlorella would leach mercury from your fillings, but ingesting whole tablets probably just removes the mercury from your tissues, which is a constant deposit process as long as you have mercury in your mouth--I have not seen any evidence that it accelerates mercury leaching from your fillings (that happens constantly no matter what, worse with hot foods). I really think that you're looking at a lifetime of taking chlorella if you ever had any mercury fillings in your mouth. The tissue deposition is probably unquantifiable.

Agreed about all metals in your mouth! I actually had crowns that were porcelain over metal replaced. The metal is likely nickel, which has a whole host of problems of its own, including endocrine disruption.

But what about titanium implants? Supposedly titanium is inert, do you agree? I say this as I will have to consider an implant, and there are dentists now who can do porcelain instead of titanium.

Aristotle said "let your food be your medicine," and it's still true. Supplements can make a huge difference in addition to a good, organic diet, but then there's still the damage from the bad dentists from the past! Darnit! Well, we can get through this, everybody!

Default Re: metal

I have often wondered if all the murcury I have in fillings contributed to all my health issues. I am loaded with auto-immune problems, or auto-immune deficiencies according to mayo clinic. Since I am poor, I am now stuck with many of the fillings I received earlier in my life. Gold does not react, and neithor does titanium. I have a long rod of titanium in my neck, and you bet I looked it up before the implant. I didn't want to add to the poisen all ready that was given to me. Too bad we can't all go back to the dentist and have this murcury removed and replaced with something not astoxic. It seems to me many of the health problems we get in our older lives is a result of something toxic. I also played with murcury as a child when I broke a temp device from my parents medicine cabnet. Had no idea of course back then. As the song from Fiddler On the Roof Says,"If I were A Rich Man" I would care formyself better than what I am able to do now. Hope all of you can invest in your health and live longer healthier lives. ginnie

Hi Stacy,

The mercury in dental fillings constantly emanates toxic vapors but are in abundance during eating or drinking anything hot... also while tooth brushing... chewing gum... grinding the teeth... and in huge amounts during the placement and removal of the fillings. As you said, mercury has big affects on the endocrine system.... the thyroid in particular. Fortunately, more and more people are becoming more informed, thanks to the internet!!

I agree, chlorella or spirulina is probably a good idea to supplement with for life if you've had mercury fillings. Because chorlella is high in iron, spirulina may be a better choice for men due to the concern with iron overload and for women who no longer menstruate. What are your thoughts on this?

I too had all of my mercury fillngs and gold onlays removed. I had them replaced with porcelain or zirconium material. I was so happy to be getting rid of them and they were my easiest dental visits ever! Yes, the metal used in porcelain fused to metal crowns can be comprised of inferior metals like nickel.... mainly to keep the lab fabrication cost down. Although the dental schools still train their students to do PFM crowns as the golden standard (as well as mercury fillings), there are a growing number of practicing dentists who in trying to keep current, use less and less metal in their practice.

The literature on titanium and zirconia dental implants state that they are both biocompatible materials and integrate well into the jawbone. Each have their own properties that may make one material a better choice than another for each individual case. Osseo News is a good site for implant information.

Hi Bryanna: I take both chlorella and spirulina. Spirulina lacks a cell wall, and the cell wall of chlorella is what binds heavy metals like mercury, so if you want to detox from mercury, you need chlorella. The amount of iron is small, like 1 mg per serving. No concerns there. I hear that a lot, and I don't know why it got that reputation. Spinach has more iron than chlorella.

Plus, let's consider that plants have non-heme iron, which is less bio-available anyway. That, of course, is the issue with spinach--it has iron, but it also has oxalates (unless cooked) and the iron is non-heme.

Spirulina is great for your immune system overall and has protein, too. Good for your thyroid as well, which a lot of people are probably sub-therapeutic on thyroid and are undiagnosed. AND this raises the issue of fluoridated water and how fluoride is super bad for your thyroid, so that's a reason spirulina is good for anyone drinking fluoridated water.

I was sort of ruling out an implant for my upper molar, but I've read about the mini-implants, and with the possibility of a zirconium or titanium implant, I'll ask about it. That would be nice! I go tomorrow for the consult. It seems like such a big deal to remove the tooth, but then I realize that the roots are less than an inch long, so it's really quite small. I will ask him about burring out about 1 mm of boney socket to make sure to get all infection removed. Sounds like a good doctor, though, with a DDS and an MD degree. He probably knows all about that! After having too many bad dentists (obviously!), I have to be vigilant.

Default Hi Bryanna

Hi Bryanna,
I am going to add Chlorella. I can't afford to have the murcury removed and replaced. You mentioned the thyroid, I also have 4 auto immune problems. I am loaded with thyroid nodes, which so far have biopsies that are negative. However my continued health issues are all related I am sure. Is there anything else I can do? Ginnie

Stacy,

You're right about the non-heme iron in plants... ie spirulina. But I would still caution men or anyone with iron overload to be sure to just take the recommended dosage and not exceed that dosage for any long period of time. Would that sound reasonable to you?

I also agree that many people probably have dealt with some form of undiagnosed thyroid issues from all the toxicities in the air and water.... the radiation from various sources.... and the mercury fillings and supplementation with fluoride only exacerbate the likelihood of occurrence. I don't recommend fluoridated toothpaste to my patients and there are so many better substitutes out there that contain healthier ingredients.

I have noticed more and more with my female patients particularly those in their 40's and 50's who are being treated for thyroid disorders. It certainly would be helpful if their physicians thought to mention the correlation between toxicity and thyroid disease. But once again, nobody wants to stand out from their peers and shake up the apple cart.

Mini implants replacing molars is not always a given. It is usually decided on a case by case presentation. I believe it can be done in most cases but only after proper evaluation of the patients natural bite, their other dentition, as well as their oral and physical health.

When speaking to your surgeon about the extraction... it is wise to let him know that you've been doing your homework and "expect" the periodontal ligament and all necrotic bone to be removed thoroughly during the extraction. Believe it or not, there are dentists (some surgeons as well) who do not think these steps are necessary.... I have no idea where they've come up with this thinking but I see it all too frequently. Also, you should discuss bone graft materials with him as it is usually best to place a bone graft in the socket at the time of the extraction.... providing the bone is healthy enough to accept the graft.

Please let us know the outcome of your consult! Good luck!

Bryanna
