Default Dental inquiry

I had an extraction on Friday the 10th of this month(With a sinus perforation that i Suspected healed within the first few days). Last night i unknowingly created pressure in my mouth and heard/felt a Weird Pulling sensation from my extraction site. Nothing came out, but shortly after i started experiencing Soreness on my gums on the Outer side that presses against my cheek, and even the Smallest amount of pressure creates uncomfortable feelings, as well as a minor soreness in what i feel would be my Sinus. As far as i can tell i didn't Open the perforation again....Just looking for piece of mind. I have a Dental appointment in a few days and was wondering if i should wait till then or Call them sooner. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Hi Necroskitter,

Do you still have the stitches in? If so, then you could have unknowingly pulled on them and that could create soreness and discomfort.

How do you know that the sinus perforation closed within the first few days post op? Perhaps it was only partially closed and it reopened? Even if that did happen, if the perforation was very small, it may still heal okay on its own.

If your symptoms continue to worsen, then see the surgeon sooner than your scheduled appointment. Otherwise, if you are scheduled to see him this week then that should be okay.

Well after the first day air no longer traveled between mouth and sinus, seen the dentist shortly after who said they didn't see any air bubbles when having me push air with my nose plugged. As for stitches I know they put in some dissolvable ones in but can't tell if they are still in or not...started to feel a sharp pain on the outer side of my gum when anything touch them(which didn't really occur till after the pulling sensation) . The general soreness has started to fade but the sharp pain persists. Thanks for the reply, My anxiety starting to get the best of me.

Necroskitter,

If you truly feel there is something wrong or something is worsening, then don't hesitate to get a sooner appointment with the oral surgeon. People typically go in sooner if they feel there is a problem. So don't feel like it's just you because these dentists deal with various degrees of post op concerns all of the time. It's not worth getting yourself worked up over..... go in sooner if you feel that you have to. It's really okay to do that.......

Went to see my dentist today, Said that the pain i was feeling on my gum was possibly bone trying to push itself out. They didn't seem to Directly address why the Pulling sensation is causing pain, but they looked and told me the site was healing fine (Better than they anticipated), gave me medicated mouth wash and sent me on my way. Generally speaking how long would it take on Average before a person SHOULD be able to safely create pressure in their mouth (I realize its an pretty much an impossible question, due to different healing rates).... Its Driving me crazy having to keep my mouth open the Majority of the time, Cause i have this issue with creating pressure with my mouth closed...Is there anything i can take to help expedite healing?

Thanks again for any/all The information you've been giving.

Necroskitter,

Did the dentist himself actually evaluate you or did someone else?

Do you know what was meant by <<you are healing better than anticipated>>? Were they anticipating post op complications? If so, for what reason? If everything is healing so well, then why the medicated mouthwash?

These questions are raised because it sounds like the post op check was nothing more than routine with not much thought to your concerns. Do you feel that way also or am I just reading into this wrong?

Not being able to close your mouth because you feel a pulling and pressure sensation is not normally found after a tooth is pulled unless there is a specific reason for that to be occurring. Are the stitches still present or did they all dissolve? Was a piece of your cheek tissue stitched to help close the extraction site? Can you post a photo of just that area of your mouth here?

Can you describe in detail what happens when you close your mouth? Do you feel pulling when you open your mouth or chew food? Does the pressure and pulling occur when you are trying to sleep or does it occur at random times?
Where exactly is the pressure? Where is the pulling sensation? Are these the same questions that the dentist asked you?

It was my main dentist, my teeth were impacted and broken when pulled so they expected a slower healing process I assume. They said I was starting to get gum disease so they gave me mouthwash. Pretty much if there is any amount of extended pressure in my mouth it feels like something inside the extraction site is moving. As far as I can tell it doesn't occur when sleeping, only when I chew with my mouth closed, or do things like trying to blow air or create suction. No cheek grafts far as I know (don't recall hearing anything about it at least). I asked multiple times why I was feeling a pull but she assured me that I just irritated the site due to me exerting too much pressure in my mouth. They took xrays and poked and prodded but didn't seem like it was any cause for major concern. I feel it was cause of the sinus perforation but Im no dentist I can try to post a picture when able.
