Cleo,
Wow that was a long procedure! What type of nerve surgery did you have? Was it from an over filled root canal? How long before the nerve surgery was the root canal done? Bryanna

Tara,
YAY!!! So glad you went through with it. You must be very relieved ) It is not unusual for the surgeon to determine during the surgery that it is safer to not go any further into the nerve to retrieve the remaining fragments of the material. It is possible that the remaining bits of material will either not be bothersome to the nerve or it may move out of the nerve canal as it heals. Time..... time will tell. You may experience various sensations, discomforts, even pain during the healing phase. It can take weeks to months for this area to really calm down. It is important that you be mindful (even keep a written journal) of what, where, when you are feeling anything or even feeling nothing. This history helps you to monitor your symptoms and progress and it may come in handy sometime down the road. It is also important that you inform the oral surgeon if you feel something is not right or extreme. He is in control of your care at this point and is responsible to see it through. The best preventive care to avoid root canals is thorough home care including tooth brushing 2 x's a day, floss 1 x a day, scrape your tongue 1 x a day, get teeth cleanings 2 x's a year and check up xrays 1 x per year. Eat a whole foods organic diet, avoid sugar in all forms other than occasional stevia or local honey, avoid soda and all soft drinks, avoid fast and processed foods and drink plenty of filtered water every day. If you need dental fillings due to decay or worn down old fillings, do not wait because decay is progressive which leads to inflammation of the pulp and infection. It is so much easier to take care of the issues before that happens. I am so relieved to know that you got the tooth out. Be sure to follow the post op instructions carefully and eat a healthy soft foods diet for at least a week or two. Take your time and heal well If you are interested, here are some supplements that would help with nerve healing and repair. I will give you product information of what I would use, you can do whatever you think is best for you. Vitamin B complex (I personally use Thorne B Complex #12 because the ingredients are superb and it contains the proper methyltetrahydrofolate form of folic acid) Alpha Lipoic Acid, an amino acid helps prevent further nerve damage (I like Thorne Thiacid-300, the ingredients are great and it is potent enough to get to work right away) Acetyl L Carnitine, an amino acid that repairs nerve damage. (Thorne Carnityl is a great product and very complimentary to the ALA and Vitamin B complex) Vitamin C helps all of these to work synergistically. ( I use Perque Potent C guard powder) These supplements work best when taken together. A good site to purchase supplements is pureformulas.com because their prices are very good and always free shipping!! I hope you have a restful night and tomorrow is a good day for you! Check in when you can Bryanna UOTE=danzergurl00;1158890]Well….it's out!! The tooth was extracted and there was no visible sign of infection. ( I know it was still an infected tooth though…so i'm glad it's gone!) He had the tooth out in minutes, but it took awhile to remove some of the calcium hydroxide sealer. He did the panoramic x-ray and it showed some material still in there. He went back in and tried to get more. Each time he touched the nerve I felt it. ugh. He removed more, but the next x-ray still showed some material. He said he got all he could without actually damaging the nerve more. He felt pretty optimistic that I would have a complete recovery. He said the decompression of the nerve should help. The numbness is starting to wear off and I can already tell I have feeling in my lip. I know it may take awhile to heal, but I trust God will bring complete healing. Thank you so much for walking me though this difficult time. I will never have a root canal again. What do you recommend for preventing these problems to begin with? I try to eat healthy, but I do love sweet tea I use a sonicare toothbrush and floss. I know I need to get some fillings, but any dental procedure terrifies me now. ANy thoughts?[/QUOTE]

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
I am so happy to be done with this! I am happy to report that all of my feeling came back as the numbness wore off. I have some swelling today, so I can't tell if my chin area feels strange because of the swelling or because of something else. I am taking advil and it's controlling the pain. I am so happy with my progress already from just removing that root canal tooth! I feel better mentally knowing that it can't make me sick and I feel I am already into the healing process. He put stitches in, to protect it more. I worry about the radiation exposure though. I had the dental ct and 2 panoramic x-rays. Anything I can take to minimize that? I took an epsom salt bath with baking soda last night. Thank you so much for the supplement suggestions. I am always interested in learning new, natural things to take to improve my health. I have read about the benefits of vitamin B after a nerve injury. I took L-carnitine at some point, I can't remember what for though… I also take Juice Plus Vitamin D probiotics I try to eat healthy. We buy all organic produce, grass fed meats, use coconut oil, etc. We drink mostly water. (some sweet tea- just a little organic pure cane sugar) It's frustrating and scary to have such bad teeth problems and have lost 2 teeth at the age of 33. My daughter, who breastfed til she was 25 months and didn't have any sweets til she was at least 2. She had cavities! I was crushed. She eats so healthy. She loves fruit. Do you recommend filling baby teeth? Do you believe you can remineralize teeth? Thanks! |

Hi danzergurl,
Glad to hear that you had full feeling after the extraction. How are you doing today? Regarding your exposure to the radiation.... epsom salt baths or even hot epsom salt food soaks is ideal. Take your supplements faithfully as they are all helpful. Add vitamin C to the regimen for extra protection and to help them absorb well. Stick with your health diet!! ) Regarding your daughters teeth..... even breast fed babies can get cavities in their teeth if the breast milk is not brushed or removed from their teeth when they sleep. New moms are rarely aware that they need to do that. Fruit is healthy for children in moderation as it is high in sugar. So again if the teeth are bathing in fruit or fruit juices (preferably make your own) throughout the day, they will be prone to cavities Regarding restoring baby teeth with fillings that have cavities.... if a cavity is caught very early on where it has not broken the enamel, the tooth can remineralize by changing the diet to less sugar producing foods, brush more thoroughly after meals and at bed time, and use coconut oil on the tooth brush instead of tooth paste. Just have the child rinse out with water after the brushing. If the cavity has broken through to the enamel, it is best to restore it while it is still tiny before it progresses further into the dentin. Otherwise it can eventually lead to an infection and even affect the integrity of the adult tooth growing in the jaw near the infected one. Hope you are doing okay... hope you check in when you can. Hi!! Wow…this has been a rough recovery. It's been 1 week today. I had some pain for a few days after and just felt out of it. I guess my body had a response to all the stress and then my mouth became filled with ulcers and mouth sores! It was miserable! I still have one on my inner cheek and it makes me feel awful. There was even an ulcer where the stitches were!
As far as feeling on my chin. I have feeling, but I can't say it's all back to normal yet. It feels a bit more sensitive on that side. Praying it will get better as time goes on. I see the oral surgeon on monday. In other news…. I stepped on my dauther's toy in the dark and fell last night! now…my knee hurts!!! AHHH! I'm falling apart! At least the knee pain takes my mind off the mouth pain. Thanks for answering all my questions! You have helped me so much! |

Hi Tara,
I think you have been through a lot, both physically and mentally, in a short period of time and your body is weary. The ulcers are awful especially after oral surgery. Based on my experience, people who tend to get these ulcers and with such magnitude after dental work, tend to have hormonal imbalances and/or auto immune issues going on. Have you been diagnosed with any auto immune problems or thyroid disorders? When those ulcers start to tingle just before they erupt, you can usually calm them down by taking 500-1000 mgs 3 times a day of L Lysine which is an amino acid that helps repair tissue and is a key component in the production of hormones, enzymes and antibodies to fight inflammation and infection. Because the body cannot make L Lysine on its own, it needs to be consumed from specific foods or supplements. At the same time, the amino acid arginine which is found in foods like chocolate, almonds, peanuts, seeds, and so on needs to be reduced because it can actually accelerate the growth of these ulcers. If you are prone to oral ulcers or other, taking a daily supplement of 500 mgs a day of L Lysine may be helpful. I'm glad you have feeling in your chin and hopefully that will continue to improve. It can take time, so be patient with that Hope your knee feels better.... Keep us posted on how you're doing. Bryanna Quote:

I'm so sad. I waited too long and my message was deleted before I posted.
The ulcers are killing me! i'll try L Lysine. I have auto immune issues and hormone trouble. I think the hormone imbalances are from breastfeeding, then having 1 cycle, but my next cycle is late. I think my body is trying to figure out what is going on. My mom has mixed connective tissue disorder, but is doing well. I have a positive ANA, but have never been diagnosed with anything. My problems are mainly after pregnancy. What else could help the pain? Salt water? glyoxide? |

Hi Byanna, I had a lateral adhesive neuroma removed off my lingual nerve 6 months post injury due to a botched molar extraction. I've never had a root canal. My surgery wasn't done at the OS's office, it was outpatient at a hospital. I'm no expert. I just live with one of those real life dental nightmares! There used to be a lingual nerve and inferior alveolar nerve damage discussion forum that I was on for about 10 years. A huge amount of medical negligence as you must know...

You need a prescription mouthwash from the OS asap. This could be toxic effect of the overfill...

Cleo. He's calling me in a numbing mouth rinse. I get ulcers often after trauma/illness. I had a horrible case of them last winter after bronchitis. I think it's just an immune response.
