Hi Charleen,

A dentist who is very experienced in oral surgery and who performs the proper surgical protocol of extracting teeth to help avoid a cavitation does not have to be an oral surgeon.

Keep in mind that all dentists, including oral surgeons, are trained to remove the tooth with the least amount of trauma, and remove the periodontal ligament and all diseased tissue and bone. However, it is best to let them know that you expect those things to be done.

The general dentists that you consulted who perform oral surgery are they holistic or biological dentists by any chance? How did you feel about their approach to your concerns about removing this tooth?

I live in Southern California but I'm willing to travel. The only options I can find are 3 dentists who extract teeth (they are not oral surgeons) and an oral surgeon who has extremely bad reviews about the entire staff (I gave them a chance but they quickly blew it with me too). I am still undecided about what to do, but I have a lot of good advice so far and if I choose extraction then I want to have options available.
Thank you in advance.

How do you find a holistic dentist? Is there a simliar designation for oral surgeons?

Liinda,

The dental profession is a tight knit industry in which their practice guidelines are clearly governed by the dental organizations that provide various types of support for their "members" so long as they don't stray too far or too often beyond their conventional teachings. Through various means, dentists are discouraged from stepping too far out of the boundaries that have been set by their conventional education. For those reasons, a dentist may practice holistically/biologically but not advertise himself as doing such. In some states and countries where holistic healthcare is more readily acceptable, holistic practitioners have more freedom to advertise themselves as such.

Like anything else, advertising oneself a certain way does not indicate their skill or competence. There are many conventional dentists and specialists who are highly skilled and they will embrace the idea of a well informed patient and oblige that patients request so long as they believe it will bring no harm to that patient ... or to themselves. This is why I encourage people to seek information to make themselves better informed so that they can be their own advocate, ask realistic questions and make deliberate reasonable requests of their dentist as to what they expect to have done.

Some holistic/biological dentists practice whole body dentistry. This can mean that they utilize the services of other like minded practitioners to help their patients with various issues without using drugs. For instance anxiety, dental phobia, drug addiction, eating disorders, some psychological issues, etc. Some of the diagnostic methods and the healing therapies can seem a bit odd or unusual to the average dental patient because they are unaware that these things exist. Some holistic/biological dentists recommend nutritional supplements and emphasize eating a healthy diet. While other may seldom delve into other areas of care but they are strict about practicing safe and less toxic dentistry.

I can give you a few sites that you can look through, but again there is no guarantee that you will find a comfortable match. The key is to let your intentions be known at the onset of the dental exam in a manner that does not make the dentist feel belittled or defensive. If you approach it in that manner and the dentist gets his back up or makes you feel like your concerns and knowledge are insignificant, then he is not the right fit for you.

I hope this list helps!

Apologies for breaking the topic, but does anyone know why is the nlm (PUBMED) site down (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) ?? It's been down for at least a week now. Is there another (mirror) site I should try?
Thanks
