I had my wisdom teeth extracted 4 days ago, left side upper and lower and a dry socket was discovered at the bottom one after having severe pain post op day 3. Doctor packed it with a dissolvable dressing today and prescribed amoxicillin 500mg TID. When should i expect the pain to subside? I am having some pain an hour ago took Ibuprofen and it subsided. The pain is radiating to the right jaw and down the left side of my neck is this expected? Should I go back and have the dry socket checked? The tissue surrounding the socket is also white. Is this normal? TIA

Kk,
It would be wise to go back to the oral surgeon for him to remove and repack the site. Keep us posted on how you're doing.... Bryanna Quote:

Thanks Bryanna
I called and he said that it was okay. So I was having pain every 7 hours just takig ibuprofen and the amoxicillin. Day 2 now since it has been repacked. The packing came off yesterday and the wound seems smaller but still white. I called again today but they cannot see me as they are fully booked as well and tomorrow I have work so they will see me on Saturday. Is this too long to wait to be seen? |

Kk,
If the pain has subsided and there is minimal to no swelling and you are not getting any oozing pus or blood from or near that site, and these symptoms do not reoccur, then you can wait til Saturday to see the oral surgeon. Regarding the white coloration: What are using to rinse with? Are you using mouthwash? Do you smoke? Are you eating on that side of your mouth? Are you brushing and flossing all of your other teeth twice a day? Bryanna Quote:

There is still a bit of swelling but the wound seems smaller. Still has a bit of white tissue. I have been brushing and doing saline washes. I am still taking ibuprofen but the pain seems to be not as intense but is still there. I don't smoke but I do have gum disease I am pretty sure and I havent been to the dentist for the past year.

Kk,
You think you have gum disease? What are your symptoms of that? Periodontal disease is a progressive bacterial infection and it is UN-likely to be limited to just one area of the mouth. This infection can delay or prevent healing of any oral surgery. The white area can be blanched tissue, it could be dead tissue.... it needs to be seen clinically and evaluated. Does the wound seem smaller because it is swelling closed? Does the pain wake you up during the night? When does it seem to hurt the worst? Bryanna Quote:
