Default Is it dental amalgams that are making me ill.

Mine is more of a question - about 2 months ago I was convinced by my sister to try some colloidial minerals (these contain 72 minerals) after about 3 days taking these I started getting pains in my hands and feet, which continued and by the end of the day my muscles would be so tense I wanted to screem. I stopped taking these after about 3 weeks. Then a week later I started getting sensations in my left foot and left hand. This then progressed into pains and muscle spasms that spread all over my legs and arms. I also got a lot of lower back pain, and blurred vision. I was told that I needed to be checked for MS and eventually after a month of waiting (Incredibly concerned as I'm a female 40 years old) I had an MRI on my brain and spinal cord and was told by the neurologist that there was nothing wrong and that it was extreme anxiety. I still felt very rough and didn't seem to be getting better - about a week after that I went to my sisters doctor and he asked to if I had thought about copper poisoning - I had a copper IUD fitted - which we then removed and I started feeling better. I googled my symptoms and it came up with amalgam poisoning. I had five amalgams removed from my right side and experienced servere burning on the soles of my feet which has only just gone away in the past week (that was three weeks ago) But I am left now with a slight lazy finger on my left side and the same with one of my toes on the left side. What do you think??? My husband thinks I'm mad I forgot to mention I have/had around 11 amalgams as well as the metal backed crowns in my mouth. Some of the amalgams have been there for 25 years and I remember the dentist saying when I had them put in that I had a lot of saliva in my mouth.

Default About 5%...

Of the population is allergic to the nickel which is used in amalgam fillings. I always ask for composite. Simply, because, I like the looks of it better. It doesn't matter which dentist you go to. It is always your choice on fillings. Even if it is a community based organization doing the fillings. I believe, they automatically choose amalgam, unless, you specify that you would like composite, for the reason that it is cheaper for them to use. You may be having an allergic reaction to the nickel. Are you allergic to any jewelry, or buttons on clothing, etc.? Ever get small, rashes in the areas of other metals touching your skin? Many, if not all metals, have a small amount of nickel in them. Hope I helped some.

Peace, and, Love

Hi Cgirl,
People can have allergies to all kinds of metals, nickel being just one of them.

However, amalgam fillings do not contain nickel. They are 50% elemental mercury and 50% mixture of silver, tin and copper.

Mercury is highly toxic in any form and is considered a bio-hazard material. Dental offices cannot dispose of any mercury containing filling in the trash can. It has to be kept in a bio-hazard container and is picked up and disposed of by the EPA. Dental offices by law, have to have special filtering sytems on their dental equipment to prevent contamination of mercury in the water supply.

Here's a website with interesting information about mercury fillings:
http://www.emedicine.com/EMERG/topic813.htm

The main reason why the ADA promotes the use of mercury fillings is because they own 2 patents on amalgam and the organization also gets revenue from amalgam manufacturers for promoting the product.

Another interesting website:
http://www.toxicteeth.org/natcamp_st..._ME_042005.cfm

Good to know that you only get composite fillings!

Leeann,
I gave two websites to Cgirl that may be informative to you. Your concern about your mercury fillings is very valid and it may have some link to your health concerns. However, it is imperative that you be well informed about removing them before you go and have it done. Do a google search on mercury removal and mercury chelation therapy to help answer some of your questions. It is also best to seek a dentist and physician who are both well informed about this issue so you obtain the proper care.
