I also wanted to mention something that helped me immensely and am still using - it is a product called Benzodent - it is a paste that I put on my dentures - just spread it on there in a thin layer. It has the highest strenght of lidocain that can be obtained over-the-counter - much better than orajel and withouth that nasty taste. It can be a pain to get off your gums when cleaning your teeth and gums, but well worth it., It completely numbs the sore spots for a good long time - like 4 hours or so. I dont think I could have gone through this without it. I have found that the only place in my area that carries it is Walmart - could not find it at CVS or Walgreens - Also found an on-line pharmacy that sells it- cant think of the name of it offhand though, but if you did a search for Benzodent you would find it im sure.

Good luck again hehe

Hi Doodlebug
Hope you soon get used to your dentures. I have been wearing dentures
for 40 yrs now so have had quite a lot of new teeth.
I have had permanant detures right away, the bottom ones always take longer to get used to but it is best to try & percivere with them.
I am lucky as i have a Dental technition in the family, if you can get to one it would have been better for you as they are better with the fittings when i`v had my last 2 pairs done by my son in law i have been able to sit down & eat a proper meal right away so you can`t get better than that.
The only problem i have is my epilepsy & have lost my bottom teeth whilst having a fit. now i know to take them out at night or having a kip in the day don`t want to swallow them it`s to expensive, yep he makes me pay for them !!! They are always cheaper from D. technition & for repairs ect.
These denture fixatives arn`t nice to use, i`v got loads have a grandaughter a dental nurse she keeps bringing the stuff, been today with some more but she did bring me a denture brush which you will need they are much stiffer than normal ones.
Could you go out for a meal without your bottom ones as it isn`t very apperant to other people that you don`t have them in.
You will soon be o.k & just think no more painful fillings.
love jane

Default dental technicians making dentures for people

Hi Jane,

You are a pro at wearing dentures and your testimony with your perseverance is exactly what people need to hear to feel more positive about their situation!

You have the good fortune of having a dental technician in your family to remake your dentures for you. But I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, in most states within the US dental techs are prohibited from directing selling dentures to people. Yes, it makes alot of sense to go directly to the one who has the skill to fabricate them and it would certainly be alot cheaper! But in those states where it is illegal, a tech could lose his license for doing that. Perhaps it is legal where you are.......??

Thanks much for your positive input on wearing dentures!!!

Default Teeth, Teeth and more teeth.

Hi my fellow denture wearers, I have put my bottom dentures in to at least have half a day with them. I will go back to Grove Ok. this month for a new soft liner.
You know, when I put my upper plate in, I sometimes get those little slits in the side of my mouth. OUCH! Maybe too much tooth and small mouth. I am writing everything down so I won't forget to discuss it with the dentist.
I need something to go right. First I fell and broke my pelvis, I had a severe attack of sciatic pain, a major surgery where I stopped breathing twice, got
a blood clot in my leg, developed restless leg syndrome, acid reflux disease, pneumonia,
one leg became shorter than the other so I now walk with a cane. I went to
physical therapy for awhile but didn't improve. Five years ago I had three brain surgerys. You wouldn't think A set of dentures would get me down!
Thank you for the great advice. Gotta go, D.bug

Default topical dental anesthetics

Hi Jayelene,

Glad to hear that you are getting use to your dentures and finally able to start eating again!

We don't realize how much we have to chew to eat any type of sandwich until our chewing abilities are diminished. Eventually, we figure out what we can and can't eat comfortably and we learn to improvise, just as you have done!

The use of topical dental anesthetics to reduce the pain of denture sores can be very helpful during the initial healing phase and also when trying to get use to a new set of dentures.

However, a word of caution about using these topical treatments......... anyone who has ever experienced an unpleasant side effect such as rapid heartrate, elevated blood pressure, jitteriness or uncontrollable shaking when they were given a shot of novocaine by their denitst, should not use these topical products or at best use them very cautiously. The lidocaine in these products is the same ingredient that is in (some of) the novocaine used to numb the teeth and gums during a dental procedure. It is similar to epinephrine and can cause an erratic heart beat/elevated blood pressure in those people who are sensitive to it. Also, lidocaine is contraindicative with people who are on certain types of medications.

I know we all tend to think since the product can be purchased over the counter, it must be relatively safe. Unfortunately, it is not the case in most medicaments that are sold OTC and it is always a good idea to check with your dr or dentist before using them........ just to be on the safe side.

Perhaps those reading your post can ask their dr and if they get the go ahead to use it....... it may be just what they need to be more comfortable!!

Thanks for your input........... glad you are on your way to smiling again!

Bryanna
