Hi Sandy,
If the yellow area has turned white and the tissue is sloughing off, then it may be a sign of healing. However, it is a good idea to have follow up xrays beginning a month from now to see how the bone is healing there. The only other replacement for tooth #2 other than an implant might be a removable partial denture. It could replace #2, #11 and any other missing teeth in your upper arch all at one time. Let us know how your post op goes on thursday....... hopefully well!!! Bryanna Quote:

Hi Bryanna, Update: Tooth 11 is healing well. the oral surgeon didn't take the stitches out yesterday, wants to wait and see me next week,. I am concerned about the previous extraction which was 3 weeks ago, tooth 2. I am biting my cheek less, so this is good and the socket is closing, looks less lumpy, looks good except one thing, inside the hole, crater area it's not normal gum color, it's somewhat reddened. The surgeon said he'll look at it next week (not the surgeon who did it since I had the second tooth removed by someone else who I've known for years). I have been on amoxicillin for 2 weeks now and penicillin for 5 days after #2 was removed so this does not look like an infection, no pain, just redness. Is that something I should be concerned about? How can they see if something's wrong? I am still using salt water but I did eat hard food on that side a few days ago, trying to avoid #11. That may have irritated it, now I am back to softer foods and avoiding that side completely. Thanks!

Hi Sandy,
The red area at the extraction site of #2 sounds like you may have irritated it with food. If so, it's no big deal, it will heal. It is a good idea to keep rinsing with the warm salt water at least another week or so to keep both extraction sites clean. I commend you on following your post op instructions so well!! As you can see, it does have a huge impact on the healing! Keep us in the loop after your next post op appt.......... hopefully everything will continue to go well for you! Bryanna ~'.'~ Quote:

Hello - I am new to this forum and I've been trying to find assistance - You all seem to know what you are talking about - perhaps you can give me some advice?
![]() Since Dec. 08 I have had .... Bottom Left 3rd Molar removed, Top Right 3rd Molar removed Bottom Right 1st Molar removed (last week) I don't visit the dentist often so I have now spent the last two months paying for that mistake! I had a severe pain in all of my right-side teeth and the dentist began root-canal work on the Bottom Right 1st Molar but I could not stand the pain so I prefered to have that molar removed - this was IN BETWEEN the dentist discovering I need to ALSO have the Top right 3rd Molar removed! I now have a swollen right side Jaw and gums - with periodic pain and fowl taste etc. Sometimes the pain is non-existent and sometimes it is a throbbing sensation. My question is - How long should these symptoms last? It has been 7 days since the last extraction....will I need another 2 weeks....is this normal? Any advice on post-extraction care would be greatly appreciated - I am doing everything I am suppose to but I still feel uncomfortable and unable to concentrate as I also have periodic numbness in my lower lip and tongue!!!! Help? ![]() |

Hi Marty,
Based on your description of the extraction on your lower right and the pain and swelling that you are currently having........ it sounds like you may have a dry socket. This is a type of inflammation in the jawbone that occurs when the blood clot does not form properly after the extraction and/or the blood clot was disturbed before any healing began. This is a condition that needs to be treated by your dentist ASAP because it can spread along the jawbone and/or become systemic. Please don't wait to see your dentist. Let us know how you are doing!! Bryanna Quote:

Hi duane28,
It is not uncommon for the adjacent teeth next to the one that was extracted to feel sore or achey for a couple of weeks after the tooth was extracted. HOWEVER, your description of the hole and the pain sounds like you may have a dry socket. This condition too could cause the adjacent teeth to hurt or feel sore. A dry socket needs intervention from your dentist. I would suggest that you make an appointment as soon as possible for him to check it out to determine if it needs to be treated. A note about rinsing....... the only thing you should be rinsing with is warm salt water, NOTHING ELSE. Mouthwashes contain alcohol and this will cause a dry socket to occur. Herbal rinses will irritate the wound and can cause a delay in healing resulting in a dry socket as well. I hope this information is helpful to you..... please let us know how you are doing.
