There are many references to Metformin and B12 deficiency in the medical literature, but this is one of the more recent. If you must take Metformin, please take B12 supplements and have your B12 level monitored! You want to be top of the range. Low B12 can cause neuropathy and many other neurological symptoms...up to and including dementia.

Thanks I take Metformin, I would guess my B12 is checked once in a while.
But unless I'm having the problems, it wouldn't always be so. I believe I have a B12 deficiency right now. So much so, I realize there is some in my cabinet at home. My husband loves vitamins, I get home tomorrow night B12 add. thanks Donna |

Well, thanks Cara for that.....it used to be 30%, now it is higher at 40%.
There were also reports at one time that people with low calcium in the diet were more prone to the B12 induced deficiency from metformin. Since everyone 50 or older is now being encouraged by the national professional groups to take a B12 supplement, this risk should be less. Don't assume that if you take metformin your doctor is monitoring you. Most don't even know this interaction. And if they do test you they may accept low numbers as normal. It is best to follow your tests yourself, and demand the answers, and learn about this issue and control it yourself. B12 is OTC in this country. Don't forget Vit D --it too is critical.
