So because I don't eat any large meals, any refined carbs or sugars, and as a snack, I might have a sprout salad with some cherry tomatoes and some black olives with the Carotina oil, well, that won't spike, right.

Yesterday my body really cooperated. I took my blood sugar at 5 p.m. and it was 116.

What confuses me is the eating at night. I never had to do this BEFORE I did my experiement. I would eat my little meals and I was down to the 5 units of Lantus and went off and MY SUGAR WENT UP, but I was able to lose the rest of my weight because I wasn't on any diabetic med at all.

But I ate MORE to keep the levels stable, and the weight dropped. How dumb is this. I ate more, I stopped the insulin, I lost weight but the a1c went up to 7.8.

So I didn't want to take any more chances so I'm back on 8 units before I go to bed.

What is confusing to me is what happened after the PN Meeting Thursday night. We all went to dinner before (5 p.m.). I had what I always have, a seaweed salad and a California Roll.

After the meeting, Alan and I came home, we got home by 9 and I was hungry. So I had a piece of chicken, and some veggies. No big meal, but a meal nontheless.

Took my shot at 11 p.m. Next morning it was 130. To me, that is just fine, because when I was off Lantus it was 180 upon getting up in the a.m.

So is the fact that I ate a protein plus the veggies at 9 p.m. and then took the shot, well is that the reason that my sugar reading was 130 the next a.m.

Because I really don't like to eat that late. I eat dinner at 6 p.m. at night, I have my coffee and a little piece of sugar free cake at about 8 and that's it. Well, it was 150 and this morning it was 180.

So what is the best thing for me to do before bedtime. Since I take the shot at 11 p.m. (should I take it at 10 or some different time), and should I eat something with the shot? Like a piece of protein? Or half an apple? Everyone is different, this I know, but I want to tweak this and I'll follow any suggestion you make.

Up until I went off of Lantus I was down to 111 in the a.m. and sometimes 127 at about 5 pm. That's why I did the experiment. I knew it might not pan out, but I had to try.

I obviously need to be on a bit of Lantus and I have no problem with that, I just want to know what I could do to not have this dawn phenomenon going on.

Maybe there is nothing I can do. Two years ago when Cornell ended, I always had Dawn Phenomenon going on but my a1c was 6.2.

If I could go down to that, I'll be happy. I 'm not reaching for 5 because I read where one shouldn't drop their a1c too low.

The dawn phenomenon is only one reading.... the day is LONG.

Ah, so if I'm good to go the rest of the day, it will all factor out and average and I should be good to go with the a1c in 3 months.

See, I pay attention!!!

lol

Melody

I believe that is correct. I know I have my a1c checked every 3 months.

But unlike you I'm bad at remembering to check my blood sugar daily.

I have to locate a way to remember better.

But as we all know I have to want to also.

I take medformin. I take 2 at night by 8pm. Reason not later, I forget if
I try later.

Did you ever think that you forget because you don't want to remember?? It makes sense. Our minds block out unpleasant things, and you don't like the fact that you have diabetes, that you have to check it from time to time.

I am like that to. If I didn't have that syringe on the table (been doing this for 7 years), I WOULD NEVER REMEMBER TO TAKE A SHOT.

Imagine that. A person would forget to take a shot of insulin if she didn't have that syringe in front of her staring her in the face every single day.

I lay out all my pills (supplements, not meds) every night. I have the morning ones and I have the evening ones.

And that darn syringe. I place it on the counter so now I know that before I go to bed I have take the shot.

Do you have one of those pill things, that you fill up with seven days worth of meds.

The night before, open up the next day's supply of pills, put them on your kitchen counter (where you have to see them), and PROBLEM SOLVED.

Try it.

Thanks much for your reply.

We diabetics have to stick together and help one another.

Happy Thanksgiving by the way.

Melody

I so far haven't put my meds all together in a pill box. Reason I had
one, and lost the box. So I have all my meds in a big black box
that I take out what I need every morning and evening. But my
medformin wont fit in there. So it sits right next to the box all the
time.

I used to have a very good memory, and I just have to make myself
do two or three required things.

See I can't remember the once a week med for osteoprosis too.

Ugh, I have to solve these problems.

Keep on me would you Melody. The problem with the one pill is I
have to take it first, then everything else thirty minutes later.

So I've got to solve both problems.

Hey, I'm 63, and I just bought my first stand up mixer and I'm learning how to bake and cook.

At 63!!

And I try and sharpen my memory all the time. They say doing puzzles helps firing the neurons of the brain.

The other day I found myself doing 3 things at the same time. I kid you not. I was brushing my teeth, and because this takes more than 2 minutes I said "why not wash the bathroom mirror with the other hand?

I did it. I also did something else at the same time but I can't remember!!

lol

You keep plugging.

You'll make it.

Okay I really don't understand why I can't ever find my kit when I want
it. No I am not saying I needed it.

I was going to check my blood sugar, just to be checking.

I'm on a schedule that I'm to check it daily, no matter when.

I still don't know where I sat it down.

Keep it in the same place. That's what I do. I NEVER move my diabetic meter. It sits on a counter along with my test strips, my lancing device and my alcohol prep pads. If I have to go out and my friends want me to test them, or I want to test myself OUTSIDE of my house, I grab another meter and some test strips and another lancing device. I have more than one.

I know that if I moved that meter off the counter, I would never see it again.

Bet on that.

lol
