Default Coping With Memory Loss

Hi everyone.

I think I'm just having 'one of those days' where I'm rather bummed out. While my story is minor, it's just starting to get to me.

I woke up to make my coffee, and then Alex (my better half) asked me why it was smoking. I don't know how many times this has happened the past few weeks, but I forgot that I didn't empty the pot, so I basically over-flowed the pot all over the counter top.

I have put soap in the washing machine twice, and I did the same with my dishwasher (I use the cubed). This is so frustrating, but it is also starting to get messy.

I did have a dry erase board so I could write things down as I did them, but - hehe - I FORGET to write on it.

Do you have any tips on how to relax after an 'oopsie'. It really upset me, but maybe I have PMS and I'm just over-emotional. God forbid I have a regular cycle to warn me when it's coming! *Snicker*

Anyway, I'd really love some tips or suggestions. Maybe I'm just being a baby today, but I am so sick of bleaching my counters because of this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Most of the people I know just put it down to:

"Having a blonde day!"

But I have blonde hair, so technically - it's always a blonde day for me!

I have memory problems too. (Some I have NO idea how to deal with -- I'm talking to my niece and have no idea what her name is )
Things like the coffee pot... I never start a fresh pot unless it's UPSIDE DOWN before I start. When I finish a pot I rinse it out and turn it upside down. When I'm doing laundry I have the detergent on one side of the laundry chest to start - move it to the other when that load has been taken care of..... yadda yadda.
And that's why I use one of those little 4 compartments per day, 7 day, pill containers - because I take my Topamax and Trileptal 4 times per day and I can always make certain that I have taken it.
And ~blush blush~ if I think of something really important I need to talk about with DH, I write a note and pin it to my T-shirt. He calmly takes care of it when he comes home from work.

Hee hee hee -- I did forget about PMS a l-o-o-o-n time ago.

For the coffee... get a machine that drips the coffee through a cone into a
clear glass pot. (Like a Mr. Coffee or a Kenmore)

For little reminders about appointments, if you check your e-mail every
day, I would suggest:

Candor
http://www.candor.com/reminder/default.asp

or some other free e-mail reminder service.

Just schedule an e-mail to be sent the day before (or the day of)
whatever you want to be reminded of.

My phone company used to offer a service where I could record messages for myself such as:
Quote:
You have a doctors appointment today at 1:30 pm
All I had to do was record the message and program in what time I
should get it. Sad to say... the phone company has discontinued the
service.

You could get a roll of RED duct tape and put pieces of the tape over each on button so that you would have to lift the tape off to turn the item on. The tape could remind you to check that there is no old coffee, no detergent cubes or no extra laundry detergent. You could also try that new detergent ball that's advertised on TV...by that guy that sells the oxygen cleaners. Or you could put a piece of red tape on the detergent box or bottle so you would have to lift it up to dispense the detergent.

While I understand there is a medical reason for your memory problems many of us do things like this too. We all lead such busy lives that it's easy to lose our place often during the day. I keep losing things. Right now we are looking for a small pair of scissors that were in my hubby's room and a small brush that goes to a dustpan that I keep in the bathroom amongst other things.

My suggestion is to fight it with games, wether it be cards, puzzles,
board games, watching tv game shows and trying to answer the questions.
This is what the Dr told me to stimulate my fathers memory and it does help.

I use to be so good at the puzzles and tv game shows. Haven't done any in over 3 yrs. Now I am starting over, you lose what you don't use.

And its fun too. Stimulate your brians with games !!!!!!

I'm with you there. Ever since my surgery,my memory sucks. My poor husband... I write everything down (if I remember too, and then I forget that I wrote it down or where I put it etc). I try to make everything as routine as possible. For work asnyways. My husband laughed at me the other day when I was making a chore list of all the things I wanted to get done that day. I explained to him (and he is already well aware) that if I don't write down EVERYTHING I need to do and mark things off as I go, I'll forget/get lost and it won't get done.

Hi Ellie,
Take my word my short term memory has really gotten bad since I've had my two surgeries. My epi told me that they saw where the hippocampus on the RTL had gotten hard and shrunk from yrs. of absence and cp sz. so they removed the right hippocampus. There are often times when I will ask my husband the same question 2 or 3 times like what does he want for dinner?
My epi and neuropsych told me to do word search puzzles and crossword puzzles to help better my memory. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

I like to go to pogo.com and play solitare. I don't have problems with flash, animations, etc. so it works well for me. Also, yesterday should have been a sign for me but I didn't pick up on it. I ended up having a filthy set of seizures that scared the crap out of me. They just took me from 1,000 MGs of Keppra to 2,000MGs - so I may be sleeping for the next day or two.

Hopefully I will get answers soon, this is only the second time I've had this type of an episode, but it scared the crap out of me. I don't like not being able to move, see, or speak. I had a moment of wanting to hold up a white flag, but I'm too stubborn for that.

Just a small lapse of losing faith, but Chemar really gave me comfort. So did Rockin4Epilepsy and Curious. I don't know where I'd be without everyone around here, it's nice having people and places to turn to when you're feeling alone.

*Gushy*

I wuv you guys!!
