My wife had to quit the GARD diet after 2.5 months

She lost too much weight (looked anorexic) and her periods went completely wack. Her seizures never improved while on the GARD diet (got worse actually). She has done best on a low glycemic diet. YMMV.

Default Low Glycemic Index diet

Bernard,

Did you do this on your own or did you use books for reference?

David had another sz this morning. He's been averaging one every other week. This is from going almost 2 1/2 years without a sz.

I need him healthy and working again since he's the main bread winner.

Thanks!!!

For the low glycemic diet, Stacy's doc advised her. Her diet is loosely based on the Sugar Busters diet. Basically, she tries to limit daily sugar (and simple carbs) intake to just 10 grams.

You could also try contacting Dr. Elizabeth A. Thiele, Pediatric Epilepsy Service, Massachusetts General Hospital per the email address given in their study report in Neurology and see if she can recommend any resources for trying the low glycemic diet.

Good to hear she is finding relief Bernard.
The diet you have posted is very interesting to me as well.
I am still following my instincts that tell me there is a gut absorption issue going on with my daughter. She is following the GARD diet, and it is giving her tremendous relief. Though now I am considering the possibilities of the viral and fungal connection too.

Dr John, thank you for helping me to understand. Every time you post I receive a new piece of information that helps me to connect the dots.

Hi : Its two weeks now I am on the guard diet and I am off my the last 25 mgs of mysoline and I am doing great. Once a week I take homeopathy med for the epilepsy. The homeopathy Dr said they could never complelty get me off me off my AEDS because I didn't get treatment when I was first diagnosed at 11. The guard diet enabled me to get off the last 25 mgs of mysoline and it calmed my stomach down . I was having such stomach problems and didn't know why and now my stomach is healing. THE icing on the cake is I don't miss the food and I like the diet.

THANK YOU SO MUCH DOGTORJ.

I am now wondering if perhaps there are many positive reasons for considering the GARD diet, and yet a lot of common sense that the Glycemic Index needs to be taken a look at as well. The more I read, and the more I look at connection to my daughters multiple TC seizures, there is good indication that glucose levels might be playing a part.
In addition the neurofeedback is an area I am researching. I am quite interested in what is being done in Santa Rosa, at the Epilepsy Research Program. 80% success WOW (...well honestly... any reason to go to Santa Rosa, I'm there)
