I have seen several books on Fibro, I am wondering if there is one in particular that any of you would recommend?

The best fibro book (most people call it the "fibro bible") is a book that is written by Devin Starlanyl called -
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain: A Survival Manual (2nd Edition) Here is a link to the book on Amazon- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...ibromyaandcmA/ There are a LOT of books out there about fibro, and in my opinion at least 85% of the books are full of junk and false statements and incorrect info about fibro. Devin Starlanyl's book is the only one I have ever read that is completely accurate and is actually helpful for understanding fibro and learning how treat and manage fibro. I hope that helps

If Liz hadn't already suggested the book I would have done so myself. I call it the FM Bible.
It should be easy to find at any bookstore and is at any book website.

I third the motion. Devin Starlanyl's book is nearly a must for people with fibro. She also has a webpage where you can sample portions of her writing and get answers to some frequently asked questions.

The best book I found was called" What your Dr. may not tell you about Fibromyalgia. I think it's by Devin Starlyndl. It is the best book I have seen. And If you can't afford to buy it the library have it or can get it for you to read.

The book is by a doctor named Robert Bennett. He is located in Oregon. I read that book a long time ago and I found it more depressing than informative. Devin Starlanyl's book is much better and more informative than Dr. Bennett's.

My favorite books are by Jacob Teitelbaum, MD : Pain Free 1 - 2 - 3 and From Fatigued to Fantastic Dr. T. is himself a former fibro sufferer, conducts research into effective treatments for fibro, and has recently been appointed medical director of Fibro & Fatigue Centers.
What I like second-best about Teitelbaum's books is that they are a gold mine of information & thoughtful commentary on the whole gamut of treatment options for fibro: medical Rx, complementary & alternative treatments, as well as self-help treatment. Since I found that one-size-fits-all approaches weren't helpful for my fibro, I really appreciate a doc who admits both the inadequacy of conventional medicine in some cases, as well as the superiority of CAM in others. What I like most about these books is that they have been extremely helpful to me, as well as to friends with fibro who have read them. Even if a person is flat broke, without any med insurance, there are tips in these books that are likely to be helpful. In part as a result of things I've read, my fibro pain is much reduced, my flares less frequent & less severe. These books are also available at many public libraries. I also liked the Starlanyl book, however I found more personal benefit from the Teitelbaum books. Best wishes. |

I am very frustrated with the med trials.
Here is what I have tried so far: Plaquenil (extreme personality changes) Neurontin (depression - however is WAS working for the pain) Lyrica (sped up my nervous system - made me feel horrible! and don't even get me started on the withdrawal) Prednisone (extreme agitation) My doc says I only have a few options left. Morphine sulfate (which I am afraid to become addicted to) or Methotrexate (afraid of the side effects). Is he right? Are these really my only options? Or do I need to consider finding another doctor? He seems to be getting frustrated with me in that I am having problems with these meds. He doesn't seem to understand that these meds interfere with my Bipolar meds and cause mood changes. Any ideas you guys might have for me? |
