Hello,
I was wondering if anyone might have some advice for me. On March 23, 2014 I developed compartment syndrome in both my legs as a result of being immobile for over 7 hours during surgery for Ulcerative Colitis. On March 24, 2014, I had fasciotomy performed on both my legs. The procedure was repeated again on the 25. Since that time, my left leg is still swollen and is the same size in circumference since the fasciotomy. Swelling for this leg has not gone down. I had an ultrasound and an MRI done. MRI shows a build up of fluid. This leg does not drain either as the surgeon tried to do so and nothing came out. The surgeon told me to "live with it" and that hopefully the swelling will eventually go down. I am able to do sports and so forth, but have no strength in my legs and I cannot run (although I try). Do you know if there is anything I can do? It certainly does not seem normal. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Solomin |

Hello Solomon and welcome to NeuroTalk, although I am sorry for the reason that you're here.
I am not a doctor or physio, etc but was wondering if the fasciotomy caused damage to the fluid drainage system (called the lymphatic system), especially if the procedure was performed in an emergency situation. That would explain to me why you have fluid visible on scan, but with no obvious solutions offered by your doctor. http://www.hannenhealth.com/lymphatic.htm The only things I can think of that might help would be elevation and massage. Because of the reason for the swelling, I'm not sure about bandaging or a compression stocking - maybe a physiotherapist could advise. http://www.realbodywork.com/articles...c_article.html
